Hi all, anyone have any suggestions how to undo the nut holding the primary drive/main gear on at the end of the crank safely? (Crank is out) Also, anyone have a spare gear with 95 scribed on it as mine has 79. Don't know what it's from but obviously the wrong one. Cheers Paul.

Clamp the end journal in a vice (without clamping the other 3 journal and supporting the rest of the crank and undo the nut

If your crank is out then I would suggest that you take it to a local garage and have it undone with an air driven rattle gun.
That’s it if you don’t have one yourself.

There will be a number engraved on the gear on you clutch basket if you add them they should come to 155

I would if I had one, that's what I'm after. My clutch basket is scribed 60 and gear scribed 79.

You can also go with 94 or 96 as it's 155 +/- 1, so 154, 155 or 156 Dusty

You can use a 12V impact gun to undo or tighten the crank nut.

If you're close enough you can pop the crank round and I'll gun it off for ya. I'm near Harlow, Essex.

Typical! I'm in Halstead so pretty much in between the pair of you. Really kind offer from both of you but I'm going to pop down a local garage tomorrow and see if they can do the same. I've tried the journal in the vice but I can't budge it! Good to learn that a couple of you guys are pretty close though. Cheers Paul.

I've asked the same question before. The backlash is the clearance between the teeth as the come together. You need the clearance for lubrication, and expansion due to heat from running. The gears in our bikes are getting on for 40 years old so you would imagine that the backlash they left the factory with probably wont be the same now, due to wear and tear over the years. But I was keen to keep it as per Yamaha intended, and fitted a 94 needed for 155 instead of the 91 I had. Worst case scenario I suppose would be gears that jam together but I would think they would need to be wildly out for that to happen ? Maybe the engineering guys on here can shed some light ? Dusty

I measure the clearance of the primary gears at correct and incorrect numbers and it does not follow any particular pattern. I'm starting to think maybe it's to do with the helix angle and the contact patch. I do have some special paint to test this idea, but as of yet not done.
