Soaked but always wondered if you fitted them dry and filled the gear box up and left it a few hours, would the plates get oiled ?

Soaked but always wondered if you fitted them dry and filled the gear box up and left it a few hours, would the plates get oiled ? Definately not. Only around a third of the clutch is submerged in oil. Addtionally the frictions are press against the steels. So unless it was running with the clutch in, there is no chance. Even doing this would take some time for the oil to full coat them. Best to do as Dusty says and submerge overnight, although I have submerged for an hour or so with no negative effects. Jon

Think it's to do with them being evenly soaked with oil so the friction across the plates is even
I've seen a few bikes that have laid unused for years then been used
The plates don't like being stored unused as only the bottom section in oil
Usually one of 2 things happen. It either seems to be fine but drags or slips
Sometimes the slip improves after a bit of use
I've stripped a few that have had long lay ups then used only to find The plates have broken into 3 or four pieces
