Friend of mine has had it in shed for over 10 years a non running RD350LC or so we thought.
From the frame and engine numbers it looks like its a 250LC 1980 (4L1) with a RD350LCF engine (1WT01****) from 1988.
Engine needs a rebore but the rest of the bike is immaculate.
My question is, is this worth it as its completely the wrong engine?
Thanks.

In what sense do you mean "worth it"?
How much does he want for it to start with??

There are some lovely hybrids with LC frames running YPVS engines. With updated running gear to match, it's a great combination Classic looks, but more capable. Do it!

Hardly 'completely the wrong engine', that would be a Honda single 4 stroke. As has been said the YPVS into the LC is a well known mod. You need to decide of you wanted an original LC or not.

1800 sounds like a bargain. “10 years in the shed” and “immaculate condition” are words that I would never use in the same sentence when talking about a classic 2stroke bike. Buy it but be prepared to pay double to get it on the road... You won’t regret it.

Others will be able to advise you on the kind of sums you'd have to spend on a rebore/re building the engine, that will come to a fair amount, have you looked into the cost of such parts yet? If the rest of the components that make up the bike are really in top notch condition, it's certainly worth £1800.

Proper engine rebuild will be £600-800 if you do it yourself, probably worth it though. Jess

Welcome to the forum £1800 is a bargain nowadays. Even a ropey, knackered unloved project bike will cost you more than that. The Pv engines bolt straight into the Lc frames so the frame should be untouched and able to accept an Lc engine at a later date if that's what you want. It's a hybrid, and they have a sub culture all of their own now, so if you get it there will be loads of knowledge and advice available should you need it. The best £1800 you will EVER spend !! Dusty

Lets put it this way if you advertised it on here for that price you would get your arm ripped off. Presuming it's a UK bike or a registered import with all the correct paperwork even if its a dog and you need to strip and sell it as spares I would think you would have no problem getting your £1800 back.
Although I don't actually need another one if you don't want it I will have it at that money.

I would happily give you a £250 finders fee and pay your mate what he wants it’s that good a deal, if you decide not to have it a true friend would tell him to eBay it, however if he’s not really that good a mate have it and flog it cue the hysteria 😘🎣

It’s a sad fact that people like us on this forum covert these bikes so much. WE are prepared to pay big money for them.
To Joe Blogs, or even a rounded bike enthusiast who could get a much better bike (on paper) for less money, they are overpriced.
WE have risen the value as they get fewer because WE have been prepared to pay the ever increasing prices to get a bit of nostalgia back while we can.
If you like LC’s buy now (if you can) or you might not get another chance.
To answer your original question, and based on the above comments; £1800 is a very good price, even for one that needs work.

I have bought it. I was going by the log book to get the engine number (1WT0).
Upon closer inspection the engine that is with it is a 4L1, so its the correct engine for the bike.
Someone has fitted 350 barrels, pistons etc at some stage.
If I get the 350 barrels rebored and new pistons, do I need to do anything else?
Or would it be better to source the 250 barrels etc?

Great news I'm sure you got yourself a real bargain there. Make sure it's running with the 350 oil pump. Also check your carbs are 350, or jetted for 350. You will find a small flat area on the side of the upper carb body that will be stamped 4l0 00 or 4l0 01 if they are 350 carbs. And get some pics up - we all like pics And unless you want it completely standard as it came out of the factory, I would leave the 350 top end on Enjoy Dusty

Oh, and to add. They don't like standing for years with no use. The crank seals can harden, then fail in use which could be expensive/dangerous, so you may want to consider changing them whilst you are doing the rebore work. At the very least you can do a pressure test - loads of info on the forum on how to do that. You can afford to spend a bit to make sure it's right, and still be under what a bike like that would cost to buy Dusty

Top result keep the 350 top end makes it a better more usable bike and follow what dusty has said. If it were me I would exchange the crank new bearings and seals etc check the other things dusty has mentioned and get it ridden oh and enjoy it and welcome

great news, and its closer to the bike you wanted as well with the LC engine. Keep the 350 cyls, check the carbs, pipes and oil pump as has been said. Then rebuild the lot with new crank seals and hone/rings or rebore and get the crank rebuilt. You'll have fun doing the engine, its an easy one.
Welcome aboard the LC train!

Dropped the engine off at a mates yesterday and already some good news.
He's managed to hone the marks out of the suspect barrel and it looks perfect.
Also have yellow paint marks on the oil pump so its already a 350.
