I've used them many times now for both crank rebuilds and rebored
Never had an issue and a really fast service
Always Jap made Mitaka pistons
Unlike another well known place that sent ones from Taiwan ๐

Ring gaps should be ok but I always check them
You need to wash the barrels out in till you can wipe them with a cloth soaked in wd40 and there is no residue
I usually use a carb or brake cleaning aerosol

Can't remember off the top of my head
There is a figure in the manual but ring gaps are usually bigger than what they state

I would recommend Grampian too. Super fast service and very knowledgeable. Have all oversize pistons in stock. They can supply small end bearings too.

It depends on where your based. I use Mick Abbey as he is 10 minutes from me so no postage costs. Even if he wasn't that close I would still use him.

Rayspeed on the A64 between Malton and Scarborough.
You need to supply pistons. Also you need to state what clearance required.
Ben is the guy who does the boring.
I've pushed the limit on tight clearances with him, ypvs at less than a thou n a half. Which was also run on motul 800 immediately. Produces decent power with very very little mods, and gets taken to 10k nearly every time I nip out.
400 a bit tight, first time round, but happy at just over a thou...and likewise gets reved. Also on motul 800, very very little mods, and surprisingly quick.
Basically a good accurate bore and tight clearances with good oil (pumps both plus 10 by arrow) have for me at least, helped towards good power and reliability.
Ben is very patient, and a very interesting guy if your into two strokes. He can actually design cylinders, and 3d prints them to test flow etc.
Oh.. I take all sharp edges of pistons, even the edge of the machine chambers.

I've used Grampian, PJ and Rob at Spa motorcycles. The Grampian stuff has always been very good, well priced and very fast turn around. Found PJ too expensive last time they quoted for a rebore but work has always been good. Rob at SPA bored my aircooled barrels and really knows his stuff, even thou used gen yamaha pistons he carfeully measured and bored each one to suit and even phone me in the evening to discuss it. Top bloke

I'm going to be posting my crank & barrels off to Grampians to be checked once i have stripped them out. Do i need to do any prepping first? obviously power valves will be removed. Do i send the pistons with the barrels to be checked or do they just measure the barrel?

If you are wanting them checked then yes send pistons. Remember to mark them left and right
Chances are although they look ok they will need a rebore
It's an engineering thing. If it ain't perfect then it's wrong ๐
Might get away with new pistons as the alloy should wear faster. As long as the bore isn't oval

You need to wash the barrels out in till you can wipe them with a cloth soaked in wd40 and there is no residue.
In my experience ,if you have cleaned the barrels properly. They will start to flash rust in 5 minutes.

Hi Mick,
When Iโve taken barrels to Bob Farnham in the past he has asked if I have cleaned the gasket face up first. Itโs a pig to do if an OEM gasket has been used as it sticks like glue. If not he would have charged extra.
You need this perfectly flat to bore parallel.
Studs can stay in.
Jon
