I’m pretty sure the fork in new form would have a bung then once removed a circlip or retaining snap ring would secure the spring top for removal / no such luck on mine , it just looks nasty , am I right in thinking the bung has snapped off at some point and it’s metal retaing collar is still inside ,as I can’t see a circlip there is a gap if I put my finger in between the spring top & this collar , I don’t just want to pry at it before asking , anyway both look like this & are corroded badly flic.kr/p/Rt7P3jflic.kr/p/2dwtZBGRegards mic

You have to push the metal cap down to reveal the clip. Can take some persuasion if not moved for a while, or worse rusted in I worked mine out before by tapping gradually with a 14mm socket on an extension bar to get it to move

Not moving as yet Am I supposed to tap the inner lip of the cap or the centre through the hole ? The workshop manual states pushing down with a screwdriver if that’s the case the centre will push leaving a gap between this inner cap revealing the circlip & spring pressure will force the inner cap up ? Is this correct

Yes. Put a socket on a bar so it sit on the flat bottom bit of cap. Push down, then try to lever clip out. extra pair of hands normally useful
