Hi, help needed I have what I believe is a Villiers engine 147cc, Villiers is not stamped anywhere inside or out, only X4009 is stamped on the front of the crank cases and CGT AND 5 are stamped on the right side, the barrel and head are one and on the base of the barrel is casted X12, the magneto is on the left side and has extra coils pointing to that it was possible had lights, taking it away from a stationary or mower engine and it has a amal pre monobloc carb with a brass twist grip, any help with finding out what engine this is would be great thank you

At first sight of your tiny picture, I am having doubts about it being a Villiers. But it looks as if I'm wrong! I've never seen one with the head and barrel cast in one piece. If you have one of those, it is a very early one. A bity more research though, and your motor, with what looks like a forward facing carb, and sunburst finning on the head, might just be a Mark VIII C from around 1924. Hope this helps. Cheers Dave

Click on the link in my last post "Villiers History". There is a photo there of the Mark VIIIC. A bike is more likely than a mower at that date, Bare.
Kickstarters on early motor mowers are not unusual however.

...the origonal poster said it had extra coils in the magneto, so I would hazard a guess that it must indeed be off a bike ? This should be a couple of pics of them in a lawnmower and a bike, have we decided its an 8C then ? I have read of people coming across Villiers engines with no numbers, Im sure people in the know said that they were "developement" type engines that mabey came from Villiers ? I have the book "The Villiers Engine by B.E. Browning" but without any pics of the engine I would be guessing. I dont see any decompressor on your profile pic, and the monoblock cylinder looks to be sitting "left and right" on your engine, where on my 6C,s 7C,s and 8C,s the cylinder is sitting forward and back. Villiers did not use Lucas Magnetos. Before the first world war, Villiers used German magnetos, but once WW1 got under way, German magnetos became a little hard to get in the UK, so Villiers then invented the Villiers Flywheel magneto, and fitted it to all its engines from then on. As said, without any pics, we are just guessing. Looking at the fins, it is later than a Mark V or 5, as the fin shape changed in 1922, so its not a really early one, but still probably 1920,s, but according to the Browning book, the 8C was made untill the end of 1947. Where did you get the 147 cc from ? The bore and stroke of the 6c, 7c and 8c 147 cc engines is, Bore = 55 mm Stroke = 62 mm. That mower is a thing of beauty Indeed it is, £75 brand new in 1922...what was the average working mans wage in 1922 ATCO - Atlas Chain company. www.gracesguide.co.uk/Atco_Mowers
