Jeez 😮
Think magazines are getting old hat now
I've not bought it for years as I grew out of the modern bikes so was irrelevant to me
Moved to a subscription of Practical sports bikes

It's joining practical sportsbike from about march next year, I believe its going to be an additional supplement within the original magazine, and at no additional cost.

I spoke to Simon Hargreaves in the week, and I asked him about the "merger". He confirmed that a section of Practical Sportsbikes mag will be for Performance Bikes articles. It's meant to be an add on to PS, and not meant to "water down" the PS content at all. There has been a lot of talk about it on various Facebook pages, and Simon said a lot of these decisions are made by the publishers and not editorial staff of the mags themselves. Jim Moore - the editor of PS is also stepping aside, to be replaced by Chris Newbiggin who used to be a staff writer on the mag. I believe Jim will still be involved though, which is great coz he loves his Lc's, and it was Jim who asked Simon to ring me about an article on my bikes. For me, Practical Sportsbike mag is the best out there for our bikes - I occasionally get CMM but not so much now. Back in the day I bought Performance Bikes religiously, but when it started focussing entirely on the latest high performance rocketships, and lost it's humour, I stopped buying it Dusty

Spot on and lets not forget the increasing age of the average bike rider...Performance Bikes at its peak was selling 90,000+ magazines a month when the country was sports bikes mad, now with ever increasingly difficult tests, youngsters just are not coming into motorcycling , the average age at our local bike meet must be 50+ easy...most of us "older" folks have moved onto adventure bikes, the super nakeds and other things like our classics lets hope the merger is successful as PS doesnt sell THAT many more magazines than PB a month...Could work for many, I like both the old and new stuff anyway.

As a writer Im always sad to see something like this. I loved PB back in the day too, and bought it monthly for years, but yeah, sign of the times I guess. :/

That is sad news. I have most of Dusty's old PB mags and the newest of the lot? Boring. No fun to read and it's all the fastest biggest bikes being ridden flat out in France...very tedious, unless I was doing the riding lol.
But I grew up with Bike and PB and back then they were a bloody riot. Strokers every issue (sometimes nothing but) and a hoot to read. I still have the mag with the Seven Up LC in it...
Sign o' the times I guess. Last ever bike mag I bought was PS to see Mark's bike.

I used to buy every magazine I could years ago, bike, fast bikes, performance bikes, but it was getting to the point that when I got it, I would only flick through it and put it down, nothing seemed to interest me in there, so stopped buying them. I subscribe to practical sportsbike, as the content does grab me, and hold me, and I was a bit perturbed to hear of the merger, and it coincides with my subscription renewal, so ill probably hold off, grab a couple of issues from the shops instead to see how it develops, before committing.

I cancelled my subs to Pb last year as it was becoming irrelevant to me I grew up on it as did most of us right from issue one Ducati pantah and z1000 moriwaki from memory. I am not interested in a 200bhp ducsuzkwakayamw and how it compensates for my lost hair I am interested in specials and stuff I grew up on. I still subscribe to Ps I read this with some trepidation but if pb is a supplement to Ps that’s ok as long as it isn’t the other way round.

I too loved Performance Bikes back in the 80's. It seemed every issue hit the spot, and it covered a wide audience. I couldn't wait for it to land in the newsagents every month. But, as said, it started to cater for hyper sportsbike riders only, and lost it's sense of humour at the same time. Every issue seemed just like the last, and I soon lost interest. Finding the first issue of Practical Sportsbike on the shelf in Smiths was a revelation, and I've bought every issue. In fact the latest landed today at home - nice to see Mike Jefferson's Yammagamma in there PB will be an addition to PS, and not meant to take anything away from PS. I think it's PB readers who get the raw deal unfortunately, but it remains to be seen if it can survive as a supplement - lets hope so Dusty

I think that during the 80s and 90s the magazine was more relevant to bike buyers as we actually bought the bikes that were in the mag, ie when the LC came out it was a performance bike and many of us then bought other sports bikes like R1s etc as we worked our way up through the ranges. A few years after I got my R1 PB was already on the out for me, the bikes featured were faster and handled / stopped better but were now 10k and I'd got into off road stuff as well by then, plus Foot n Mouth had given us the impetus to build motards and I realised I could have more fun on those. That building and 'more fun at less speed' led to me hankering after LCs and the like again as I wanted the rush of a powerband rather than seeing 150+mph on the clock. My focus shifted to 'fun' not 'speed' etc.
I agree with Dusty, when PS came along it fitted what I wanted from a mag. CMM was always talking about brit bikes and I wasnt buying one of those, it was the generation before me's mag, I like my motorcycles from Japan thanks!
For sure for PB its had become hard to sell enough volume as bikes and bikers change and focus has shifted away from the race-bikes-on-the-road that started in the 70s and enthralled us, provided artwork for our bedroom walls and gave us the LC and the 500 etc. I guess today that less buyers are wanting to do 200mph (how often can you do that?) and this has led to buyers looking at other things they can do with bikes and this brought us adventure bikes, plus of course few commute on a bike these days and as we know 16yr olds cant afford to insure a bike so that market segment is also a gonner.

I bought the first issue and most since Nobody wants 200 hp sports bikes now , and nobody rides like a knob , cept us lot these days Lc’s and all the other sub 400 cc bikes are just as relevant theses days as they ever were, fun cheap and still very much envied You been on a biker thing ride out recently ? I had one of them , can’t afford one now , Indian scout rider Love them , but too expensive for what they are , multistrada rider I’d love one of them again , zzr1400 rider What’s that , it’s faking fast, gsxr 600 rider And so it goes Times and things change Magazine content, and existence too Mike
