The 4L0 project I'm on with came with a refurbed shock absorber, but the piston cylinder has been painted a gold colour which doesn't resemble the factory plated colour, which is a light metallic green finish.
Has anyone come across a decent rattle can colour for this which is closer to the stock colour?
Thanks in anticipation, Shaun

I seem to remember that Tony at AJ's in Hull used to re zinc them to the original gold / yellow colour. The ones I've seen him do looked like brand new originals.

Ive been looking at rezinc'ing mine. Has anyone taken one of these apart and can confirm that the key to getting one apart is to remove the spring clip under the alloy housing? How on earth did Yamaha pressurise these when building em?

Saw it done a while back ..With care it's quite credible. Doesn't give one the disasembled ( and rebuilt? ) shocker though that a proper Cad replate would.

Thanks bare, but I was looking at totally rebuilding the ones I have and so real plating was a must.

Kev Redbimota sorted me out with a couple of re-done shocks, look great, thanks. I think he has a few left if anyone needs one.
I spoke to Tony at AJ's in Hull and he will also strip and re-zinc passivate, and paint the spring etc but works out at £120 each and you have to supply the shock.

Cosmetics onna Outside of the shock are/can make it pretty. A bit like a rattle can 'rebuild' of an engine It's the internals that are critically important. Surely a shocker gets restored/rebuilt internally as well.. for the price? Otherwise Why bother

Did Tony mention these things: how he lets the pressure out? Does he fit a schrader valve fitting to pump it back up? and... what pressure does he put in? Armed with that info I will get a bunch of my shocks redone...

I prefer to powdercoat exposed springs.

Would be interested myself in that service.

I found someone selling refurbed ones but they were £200
I know we bang on about originality but I'd rather throw that money at a yss one
They can be re gassed but as there are no parts it's still got 30 years of wear and tear on it
Also as for stripping to re zinc it it think the lack of schrader valve says it wasnt taken apart
The hard chrome rod is probably unlikely to plate
Either that or they ore masking it
I did this with some rd 500 carb parts that had plated outer ends but the shafts looked stainless

I agree Steve, I only want to do this as I can do it considerably cheaper than 200quid on my own units, plus all mine have good chrome, I ditched the ones that didnt, waste of space etc.
