Tabernas is in the Almeria province a fecking long way from me,in my old 1.2 kangoo the 400 klms 4 hour drive is tedious although driving through the Malaga coastal area is beautiful.
So i got to the hotel/hostel in the Tabernas village first of the 2T crew who had all reserved rooms together..
Of course 9pm was beer O´clock i did if you dont mind..
The other lads turned up and then we had dinner and a couple more bevies. The price of the food was ridiculously cheap and well tasty to boot.
On to Saturday morning and off to the track, its quite cool and fresh.
i´d put the soft 130 section avon on the back of the ypvs i got off Dave T, kitted up and went out in first qualifiers..
Ive only been here once before on the A/C RD and didn't enjoy it.. due to getting hammered the night before..
I get into the groove but the bike doesn't like the 130 Tyre at all, i wobble round and do a 2:14 lap. not bad but not good.
As ive learnt plenty after 5 years i had the hindsight to bring the wheel with the 110 section tyre.. so in it went.
This circuit is a very technical one.. blind curves and the like need lots of practice really.
Next session as soon as i hit the track the bike feels great again, i do quite a few laps tring to follow others to learn any tricks
i feel better every lap,and the timing sheet agreed,i got down to a 2:10 lap which aint bad with no track knowledge.
5th on the grid in my class for the start.
Lets skip to the start, ive been doing storming starts for the past few years, this one was the best ever..
i blitzed my class and was on the back of the 600 and 750´s into the first corner and then all the way round the back twistys,
only the tz250 came past, onto the kilometer long back straight the big uns pissed off up the road but im still doing great
Until... Red flag at the end of first lap.
The electric went so for safety they had to stop the race..
Half an hour later re-start, got another great start and the hole shot into first corner..
the tz250 and the young lad on the rs125 came past as they do.. and then a had another black ypvs on my ass.
theres a barsteward chicane before the back straight and with still cold tyres i misjudged it and went off track,
most of the pack went past and i quickly got back onit..enit..
popped past a couple of slowies to get on the back of manolo on the yellow RD350. he know the track well but i catch him quick,,ish..
We have a nice battle till i get past him and i put my head down to go after the RG500, then disaster when on the long long lefthander cranked right over the engine splutters lifting the bike up and off track again..
get back on behind manolo and others again and back to square one..
But that was red mist time..brain out and i was going like stink, passed manolo on the penultimate lap and the RG is two corners ahead,
im catching hand over fist but he pulls a massive advantage up that stupid long straight.
takes me half the last lap to catch him and i stuffed it straight under him in a difficult corner,
knowing his speed down the straight i really go for it in the last 4 corners before the straight,
I look back and see him coming onto the straight.. looks about 2 or 3 seconds back..cool.
Err no.. that rocket ship flew past and i closed him back up into the flip flop before the flag straight but he has too much power for my bog standard rd and crosses the line a second ahead of me for the last podium place..
Not my best result but a cracking race i enjoyed to the max. the last lap was a 2:07 which is not too shabby.
1.5 seconds faster than the rg500 best lap. shame i dirt tracked twice but made for more fun.
Thats it for 2018.. as i wasnt going to the last race 650 klms away in my wee shed of a van.
In the end no one went so.. hey ho.
All in all my 2 stroke cup has been a success so im a happy bunny. I ended 3rd in the championship with the rg wining
I need more speed..
Cheers John.
