Oooh, that's very nice Steve I do like the blue. I had one, it was a Subaru colour blue paint that was used. Looked lovely. Of all the bikes I've built over the years, it's only the last 2 Lc's that I've finally bitten the big financial bullet and got pro paint jobs done. So glad I did - makes a huge difference to the finished bike. Mark Cordwell did them both - a true gent and master of his craft, and well worth the outlay. Yours looks great mate Dusty

No change out of a grand if you take it to some places, IIRC Dream Machine cost me that a few years ago.

It's easy to forget that before the advent of the new tanks and panels, Nos Lc tanks would appear on ebay for north of £700, and a buyer could then well find his existing, faded panels wouldn't match it anyway ! I've rattle can painted loads of bikes over the years, simply because I couldn't afford a pro job at the time. The last 2 builds are different though, and in my eyes, it's money well spent. Mark Cordwell is doing my Tz tank at the moment, because I want it mint, and I didn't want to attempt that myself. Tank and panels are such a focal point of a bike, they have to be right, imo Dusty

I know paint ain't cheap but if it's a straight forward paint job with one colour and the standard LC transfers applied then that is a bit rich
If it was a one off where the tank/panels were hand painted in then OK
Does look great though

It looks from the photos like its one of those colours that has to be done like popsicle purple. It needs a silver base cote. The top coat is a cow to apply as it needs to be so even or it looks like different colours. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I was told by a very reliable source of the cost of the actual materials, as I had a set in popsicle.
Hey, as a kid I've painted push bikes with a tin of gloss and a brush. Good jobs cost and are well worth the money.

Just rang Imageworks decals and they offer a fitting service for the decals
In his own words the tank is a b*****d to do LOL
They charge £65 for the standard LC decals and fitting too which I though was good He also said they can wreck a few decals fitting but that wouldn't be passed on , so if you did it at home and wrecked one, you would be stuffed Just have to get the base coat on then take the panels up and they fit while you wait !

Knew they fitted them Mark Cordwell doesn't do his own decals, he takes them to The Image Works to do Decals can be a right bitch, I've done loads and the hardest and most hated is early lc2 tank decals. It's like trying to get no creases putting a sticker on a ball Interestingly on one of the updates I got from the painter they said the candy and the first coat of lacquer was done, just waiting on decals and second lacquer coat I always thought they would go on before any lacquer Steve

Not sure but think the laquer protects the decals from the base coat as they can react

Yes it's a candy over base coat colour so primer, base coat, candy coat the 2 x lacquer so not straight forward I've painted the lc2 stormy white, stormy red and both were c.o.b colours As you say the shade is drastically affected by number and thickness of coats of the candy The red wasn't too bad but the white went silvery if you put too much on and not enough pearl if too little Strangely I could understand a white base for the white but the red used a white base too Steve

Not sure but think the laquer protects the decals from the base coat as they can react Maybe if they are using water based base coat they can't do the decals "wet" The lacquer will be either solvent or 2 pack so water proof Steve

On the tank, lacquer over the decals otherwise fuel will destroy the decal. All others should not have lacquer on them. It something to do with decal lamination but I have no idea what that is......

I had it done on my n1 build as wanted it as factory as possible Yes tank decals are clear coated but the problem with standard decals is they are mostly printed on a lighter shade vinyl Rub against it and the colour wears off I had the side and tail decals laminated. It's just a layer of clear vinyl bonded on top of the printed one The Image Works will make them Steve

That looks lovely had my first hybrid in that colour not many about. A proper paint job makes a bike mine cost me £750 cash plus decals plus all new bodywork and tank. For me a proper professional job makes a bike. This will look stunning top job

For me a proper professional job makes a bike. This will look stunning top job Agreed. Although to be fair you don't really notice it while you're riding. My £1000+ Dream Machine paint now has a couple of chips on it, one annoying one at the front where a stone flicked up and hit the right side front of the tank. And a scratch (that might T-cut out) where my jacket zip caught it. But it still rides the same as it did before and I also think a bit of 'patina' looks good as well. I was going to get my old classic bike done, but I'm just not careful enough and I'd only end up flapping about marking it.

I have managed to persuade a painter that paints vintage aircraft for a living to do my RD 250 & 400E and 400F paint sets for me at mates rates, so am keen to see how they turn out. They are all the same base colour (clean white) and I am supplying all the decals but hoping the total cost will be less than $1,000. I have seen plenty of examples of the work he has done on aircraft and they are stunning and the fact that he is a biker, meant he was super keen to do my tins, so fingers crossed they turn out well.
