My LC is the only one I have owned, so I have nothing to compare to.
So wondered if this can be improved on or its how it is.
When going back down the gearbox the gear change become really sloppy between 2nd and 1st as though there is nothing there (best way I can describe it) and then is really difficult to engage neutral if the bike is running, as soon as I turn the engine off, snicks into neutral straightaway. Its never jumped out of gear.
Opinions please appreciated.
Mike

The second to first problem is unusual but neutral problem is very common if you do a search you will find lots of info but the easiest cure is change the oil to gear oil for use with wet clutches

I cannot engage neutral when the bike is running. As stusco says I think it is a common problem.

Looks like you will need to pull the casing off ,I would try adjusting the clutch first is there any drag?

Adjusted the clutch, how do you know if you need to replace the clutch plates etc?

If it slips under load When it’s on the centre stand in neutral does the wheel spin if so you have clutch drag If you do a search there is quite a few things you can do / buy to solve this or just learn to slip it in neutral before you stop

My guess is that they swell up a bit once the engine is hot,....well that's the only time I find it difficult to find neutral, it's fine whilst cold.

most common issue is clutch drag, this is becasue alot of the after market clutch kits have a taller stack height, which causes drag, if you take the clutch apart check the thickness of the fibres and steels, fibres should be no more than 3mm and no less than 2.85mm, the steels should be no more than 1.2mm and no less than 1.15mm
Only recently have I managed to find an aftermarket clutch kit that has the right thicknesses for both steels and fibres, generally the fibres are 2.85mm thick (new) and the steels are either 1.5mm thick or 1.6mm thick, in most cases it is fine, but I've had a couple of situations where this has been an issue.
Now I tend to fit 3 original steels and 3 new steels if I can't get hold of the 3mm thick fibres

from one of my parts supplier Any more details on the make of the kit? If any other members are planning on fitting a new clutch, knowing which one to look out for would be great to know.

From memory, I thought the LC Steels plates were 1.2mm and the air cooled ones were 1.5mm?
Perhaps we need to measure the thickness of the whole pack to make sure it is not too thick?
You also need to make sure you have no warped plates, as they will cause drag. I usually stack all the steel plates together and check to make sure I cannot see any daylight between them.

I can't afford to pay other folk to work on my vehicles period, apart from the financial aspect, I enjoy working on vehicles, it's a part of owning them in my eyes.
