Hi, just installing my water pump seal on 250lc and just wondered.. does the seal have to fit tight to the inner edge of the case or not?.. just asking because if I do fit it tight then it will overlap the water channel slightly which may restrict the flow of coolant, or is it installed with the seal level with the water Chanel? It is a genuine Yamaha seal from Fowler’s. Also the genuine Yamaha bearing fits real easy into the housing.. almost too easy.. is this normal or would it be better to put some bearing lock in? by the way the old bearing came out without too much bother , it wasn’t a tight fit at all. Any advice from the experts would be greatfully received.

I usually drive the seal in with the bearing until the bearing seats.
I'd put some bearing lock on it, they can be a bit on the loose side

Also with this water pump bearing, should the plastic cover side face towards the water side or does it not matter,?Haynes manual states serial numbers towards the outside, the serial numbers on this new bearing are on the plastic cover side but when i removed the old bearing the numbers were facing towards the engine away from the water . Hope you don’t mind me asking such trivial questions but its the first time that I’ve opened up one of these engines so still learning!!

Got the oil seal in now with the bearing seated so should be good to go.. good point regarding the oil needing to lube the bearing.. I think whoever had the bike previously had installed the bearing the wrong way round... cheers guys.

The bearing that was in when i acquired the bike had no shield and was a koyo bearing, the one I got from Fowler’s has a shield and is Yamaha genuine so can only assume they must now come with the shield
