Been offered a R1-Z at a reasonable price but was wondering what people's opinions are on these bikes? Fancy a 250 but with some comfort and lc's are out of my price range now!
Any info would be much appreciated.

Lovely bikes, nice engine and brilliant to ride if you are vertically challenged

They are the best value for money 250 out there
Not because they are cheaply built but just not the inflated value of rd stuff
What else can you buy for 3 1/4 grand

The price for these are also starting to creep up, bodywork panels are hard to come-by, so make sure they are ok, never seen a used tank either (not tried any Japanese auction sites though)
Must be able to get an LC for around that price!!

I really like them, and as Steve says, great value for money. My only issue is they seem physically small to me - I sat on Looey's at Brands once and it didn't feel as big as an Lc ! I'm 6ft so not huge, and if you are a bit shorter then it's not an issue anyway, but I personally like a bigger feel to a bike. Wouldn't stop me having one but I was a bit surprised at how narrow the tank felt once sat on the bike. And I'm sure there was someone on here with one that fitted a 350pv engine into Dusty

I'm only 5'8" so might even be able to touch the floor! Have bid on a few in the past, always from DK Motorcycles but never hit reserve. Phoned them up and the price they want for an unregistered one is as much as this and sometimes slightly more.... This seems like a no brainer to me, so best get my flexible friend out!
Cheers

I had one for four years or so. It is tiny as said above. Like a 3/4 sized bike.
I put Hyperpro front springs in mine, otherwise the front just about collapses with 12 stone on board.
Nice bikes with a really close ratio gearbox and lots of midrange, compared to a TZR. Make sure you don't have the later restricted CDI.
I've seen quite a few bikes at Motorcycle Giant and none of them have been in good shape.
At least they seem to be registering and doing some work on some now, rather than claiming: SELLING WHAT WE ARE HAPPY TO RIDE OURSELVES. Then selling non-running stuff in a poor state straight off the container. Or left lying around for ages.
They are tough to sell though, as no one here had one when they were younger.

Did check and it's a 1990 model so should be the derestricted CDI if my info is correct? Also only paid a £200 deposit so if it's a bag of spanners it's no great loss lol.

I think you're ok with a 1990.
If you have a 3XC-30 CDI, it is restricted to 40ps. A 3XC-00 is for the 45ps model, or even better a 3XC- 70 was for racing, IIRC.
My refreshed R1-Z with swarnbrick cans, otherwise stock, did 40bhp on the dyno. The same as a good TDR on the day, but with a much stronger mid range.
Howard on here did quite a bit of work on his, might be worth a u2u.

There was a fella on the Tzr forum I think - had a few. I thought he was on here but maybe not. If my memory serves correctly, his username was FredJee I believe. Im sure he had one with a 350pv engine fitted. It was a long time ago I was on that forum though so I could be wide of the mark. Maybe worth a look over there for info; www.pure2strokespirit.net/forums/index.php/Dusty

If it ever arrives..... Lol. Yep will do. How hard to fit the swarbricks? Cheers I had a nightmare trying to remove the standard cans (also not wanting to dent them etc) thought I'd missed a hidden bolt somewhere) but some serious whacking did get them off eventually, they were just stuck with built up carbon etc, fitted some carbon end cans and it still sounded a bit 'weedy'

Paid deposit and they promised delivery within 2 weeks, that was nearly 3 weeks ago and now they are saying they can't deliver to Devon? Just the attitude stinks, no sorry and no commitment to repay deposit! Mentioned the distance selling regulations and they got nasty. Lesson learned......

Bought my old R1-z from them too , I asked about a bike they had advertised on eBay but wasn't on our shores yet and asked if I could leave a deposit on it , it was around £2500 and they said no to the deposit but would contact me once it arrived . About a month later I saw it on eBay as ready to collect and also another tatty one but it was fitted with 3XV front end etc on for just £800 so I phoned and explained who I was and that I had chanced my mind on the original bike and wanted the cheaper one, I talked the lady into taking a big deposit on it and I would collect at the weekend. When I called the next day the guy called Bazil who run the shop said the payment hadn't cleared and I couldn't collect it , this went on for over a week until I called them one Friday and told them to get ready as I was coming down the next morning to collect my bike. Got there nice and early in a right mood expecting a battle but after about a hour of fecking about Bazil admitted it was on at the wrong price it should have been £1800 but let me take it home for £800, there was no way I was leaving without it anyway.

Yeah bassel is his name, finally got my deposit back! And luckily enough DK Motorcycles had one advertised with jackal pipes on which I won on flea bay last night for £1750! Result! Sounds like you had a complete bargain there Howard especially with that front end on it.
