Just read your post again forgive me we’re having a heat wave first one in years so I’ve had a few. I see what you mean I’ve had the top skimmed for leaking head gaskets the bottom looks standard as in there is a groove round the skirt it looks the same on both I think maybe my drink induced memory

From the O-ring it looked like a sudden ingress of water that caused the issue. Sorry Kenny I’ve not been ignoring you just sorting the other problems first, I’ve never heard anyone holing a piston from a leaking head gasket but if that’s what caused mine how can I stop it happening again. dont suppose you can explain the science in how it causes this so I can show of in the pub

If it wasnt water from the pinched head o-ring then it went very lean suddenly ie out of fuel/ onto reserve, blocked jet or massive air leak. The fact that you have now rebuilt it with new o-rings and it now runs okish as the plugs look similar now leads me to the first one ie water. A water leak will cause pretty much the same symptoms as a sudden air leak/lean mix except the sudden weak one will usually only effect the front third of the piston by burning off the front part down to the top ring and look very light grey. The water can affect the whole crown and cause the hole to be burnt into the piston crown due to the sudden rise in temperature in the combustion chamber. Your other cylinder looks good so that rules out the ignition timing. Mixture is unlikely as you havent changed that. NOt a hot plug as other piston is fine. Leaves WATER ingress
