It struck me today, when restoring a bike, particularly if you rebuild your own engine, how many individual component parts you actually handle in the process. Has anyone ever been bored enough to try and work out exactly how many individual parts go into making up our pride and joys??.

The back of the parts book has lists of the part numbers, you could count em off there I guess?

I'm unsure, what is a part? For example a wheelebearing may include say 20 bearings, an inner race, an outer race plus 2 cages etc but does that make it one part or 24 parts? Is the gear oil a component? brake fluid? air in tyres? valve in the inner tube? each screw, nut, bolt, bush, pin?? Most components are made up of sub-compnents so a difficult question i reckon but would love to know the answer! Maybe its closer to a million than we think!? Who has counted up?

A "part" would have a part number, so as Jon says, just count up all the numbers off a fiche. Having said that the clutch basket is "one" part but we know you can do an aftermarket cushion change so some components can add to the total. Dusty

Just counting the fiche will only show you the number of different parts (in general).
For example there are many occasions where a part is used multiple times such as a piston and it’s components where you need in this case 2.
I’d have to say it’s the number of parts to build a bike, and individual parts and not sub assemblies.

Also, some assemblies have a sub fiche which is not in the main parts book. The oil pump is one such assembly. Something like the clocks may well be another. It gets complicated. The oil pump pulley for example looks like a separate part, but was only ever available with a complete pump. Other parts ARE available, but as said, not shown in the main parts book.

Is this counting component parts? ie the cdi and rectifier are made up of lots of components, diodes ect, but are counted as 2 parts. And wiring looms are counted as 1, but are many wires and connector blocks............................

What about the smoke in the exhausts and the air in the filters, and the hardest part to obtain the legendary power band! NLA from Yamaha
