I just read in MCN that the idiot in charge of London,Sadiq Khan is planning on charging riders of older bikes(pre 2007) £12.50 a day to ride in London. Ok,I don’t live in London(I’m glad to say!)but 28 towns & cities are planned to join the “clean air zone” with the same charges planned. Looking at finding out if where I live is one of the 28. All my bikes,my van and the wife’s car are all pre-2007,so getting around will be very expensive for me!!!! Could this de-value or bikes. I know some people hardly ride their bikes ,but I do!!

An easy way to get round the charge would be to head out on country roads and avoid cities completely. I thought everyone did that already A month or so ago I was in London and got talking to a taxi driver about the emissions from black cabs. He told me that any hackney driver buying a new cab now has to get an electric vehicle - petrol and diesel power are no longer permitted. There have been ongoing trials of the battery powered cabs and in real-world use they have a range of about 80 miles. This particular driver lived out of London so getting in to the city and back home again each day was a 33-mile round trip, which would leave him 47 miles - barely enough to get to Heathrow and back. There are no charging facilities at Heathrow yet, and very few in the centre of London. A fairly easy guess as to who is responsible for rushing out the 'all electric' idea ..

I do ride the country roads, but my fear is if you live in the city, you got to ride through it to get to the country roads!!! I also have a little Suzuki gp100 1980-had it from new and now use it to pop into town to get a few things now and again,as you can’t drive anywhere without being in a bloody endless traffic jam.And as for the thousands of people working in the classic car/bike industry, how much of a future do they have😏

An all electric vehicle is never going to work out in that particular application I feel, not unless battery technology moves on.

The beauty of living in the countryside, the local cows put out more toxic gas than any of my vehicles

That's a bit rugged. Who would police it?

That's a bit rugged. Who would police it? ANPR is everywhere, just records any movement past a certain point then sends out a fine.

Correct, I use to live just within the M25, owned an old diesel camper van which wasn't low emission zone friendly, I strayed onto one A road once, that was part of this zone. I got a warning letter basically, next time it would be a fine.

London is a different country anyway ! It's getting larger over time,...that low emission zone comes close to most of the M25 for example, it's a bloody big area in total.

I wonder what Sadiq Kahn would make of the end of this interview with Freddie Spencer, ‘back in the day’!

Love fast Freddie was that nobby Clark push starting the bike? Blimey Veg old lad, there’s nothing wrong with your eyes!. 2 things struck me watching that. 1. What an absolute gent Freddie is, and 2. For how dated the traffic in the background looks, the profile of the bike would still hold its own today - imho of course 👍🏻.

I’m only 48 😀. I love the rothmans scheme and yes it still looks amazing, we are by virtue of being here a bit anal about the 80’s . Thing for me is in the mid 80’s gp bikes looked so different from what you could buy, today every jap 4 race rep looks like an M1, Rcv etc

I actually watched it live back in 1985 (wogan on at 7pm BBC1 everynight) when he won both the 250cc and 500c grand prix .I am sure thats shepderds bush in the background which was just around the corner form BBC center I ride into London everyday on my motorbike . I know the congestion charge will affect bikes but not till 2020 .

Apologies Veg 😔 ‘old lad’ is a figure of speech from my part of the world - didn’t intend to sound ageist 😁👍🏻
Hard to believe Freddie would never win another 500 gp again after this interview. they reckon as he did both 250 and 500 in the same season, it put that much strain on his wrists he never got over it.

Anyone remember in the 80’s, a German eurocrat called Martin Bangemann, calling for ‘leg shields’ to be made compulsory on all motorcycles?.
Another throbber.

I went on all the protest rides including to Brussels where they reckoned there were upwards of 50,000 bikers, it will live on for me due to getting hammered on cheap Belgian lager and watching a group of Belgian bike plod wheelie away from some lights and being caught up by another group on a motorway who gestured for us to ride faster

Ah yes, the old leg protectors......they wanted to put them on ALL bikes (even retrofit them to old bikes) until tests showed that they actually increased brain/neck/spine injuries. And how are they going to protect your legs if you've...ahem...dismounted...during an accident? EU retards at their finest. I suppose Norbo could've done a nice line in carbon wrap ones, though.
