Anyone use an SAE 80W90 oil for chain lube?

Did years ago before chain lube. Not the best choice nowadays in my opinion .

I used to manually apply scottoil years ago
Was easier to clean up than the chain lube

Yes chain wax, no fling so stays where its supposed to be But I guess that dirt etc sticks to it too and trying to clean the chain/remove the wax is a job and half?

Nope, rag and wd40 to clean, reapply the wax, anything oily will attract dirt, but general road riding shouldn't be that dirty, try keeping a mx bikes chain healthy!

I haven't had a chain driven bike for more than 20 years, I do remember trying a few different chain lubes back to the day, PJ1 use to be popular/one of the best.
Never thought of using gearbox oil though.

I use gear oil to lube the chain on the bike I ride all year round, currently an old sv650 and previously various enduro bikes. I wash the bike weekly, put the bike on a stand, wipe the chain with a rag to remove as much dirt as I can and apply gear oil sparingly with a paint brush. I get big mileages out of the chains and the small amount of oil that comes off is washed off easily without having to use degreaser or paraffin that is needed to remove chain lube.

Not to mention it's cheap which is the biggest concern, when you are a thrifty Yorkshire man.😀
