I have learned today that i will be very busy for the next couple of months. I had planned to open up the top end of the engine on my bike and measure every thing before i go to Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry to blast round the circuit or have a go at sprint races. I wont have enough time as i also have to prepare the other bike for The Rockanje Classic TT for Kees.
My plan is to take the pipes off and check the blow by colour around the piston rings and measure it on the dyno. I'm not much of a fan for a compression test as the oil in the fuel can influence the readings (in my opinion)
Has anybody any other suggestions without a strip down?

Good idea I can do it through the exhaust port as I do not have a flexible endoscope

Aldi/Lidi stores sell a stand alone scope with monitor from time to time, cost around £30, I bought one the first time around, it's certainly come in handy.

Thanks for your suggestions about the endoscope. Fate is just so strange. Tomorrow i have to do an endoscope inspection of the oil ways in a crank pin that has just been annealed after a big end bearing failure. i will post some pictures of the endoscope up later.

Here's a quick tease. As you can see it's a 2 piece endoscope that comes in matching colours. I will post some more pictures later tonight after some work on the bike for Kees, but first some microwave food. AHH the joys of being a bachelor

Ok i changed the cylinder head and Kees turned up so he got a short lesson in how to use an endoscope. Here he is looking like he knows what he's doing. Here are some pictures we made. The picture below shows the worst scratch i could find this is not so bad and an endoscope really magnifies the surfaces you are inspecting Below is a picture of the exhaust port with the bottom part of the locked power valve Most of the cylinder walls on both cylinders look like this except for some scuffing above both exhaust ports.
I hope some of you find this interesting to see.

That motor looks in good condition. Scratches always look worse in a photo than they actually are.

You can use a compression tester on your engines too, to make sure the rings are sealing equally. You may need to put a little oil down the plug hole to get the rings to seal if doing from cold. If you record the values on your new engine builds, you can keep a record as you go to see how much wear you have and that it is even, and also make sure you are not getting too much blow by.

....just thought.....while you have the endoscope, you could get Kees to check your prostate gland..... ;-)

....just thought.....while you have the endoscope, you could get Kees to check your prostate gland..... ;-) Ha ha, the first thing i did was shove it up me nose and he was not impressed (Dutch humour is not quite the same as ours). If did your suggestion he would probably be traumatised. I would not like to try and explain that to his mother
