Hi Jason Sounds an interesting build Make sure you do a build thread as guys love to see them. I did consider Rd400 wheels at the beginning, but as I had the Suzuki wheels and forks, I went with them, plus I love the look of 3 spoke wheels. The other thing is 400 wheels are very heavy !! I do like the look of them too, but saving weight is quite important to me. I too struggled to find info on fitting an Lc or Pv engine into an aircooled frame. I did pm someone on a different forum but got no help, so I started by getting a centre line with engine and frame and then working out the spacer widths at the front. Be aware that if you use tie bars that run forward as standard, you will probably need to cut channels into the cross member on the aircooled frame as it's pretty tight under there. I still haven't decided on which engine to fit - I have an Lc and an R pv on the bench. Whichever I don't use will go in the Lc project bike I have so I have to consider 2 bikes rather than just this one. This frame was already modded for monoshock, but I have a spare aircooled frame and another ally Tz tank, so maybe, if I like the finished look of this bike, I will build a twin shock version ! Mine isn't gonna be a true copy of an early Tz - more a café racer using parts I really like the look of/already have. I'm trying to keep costs low but they are already ramping up !! The Tz tank is the focal point of the bike - it seems so big on the bike and I love the look of it. I've just got to choose the right paint scheme for it though - possibly not white/ red Dusty

Went to Kempton autojumble this morning. Never much Jap stuff there but usually good for odds and sods. I had my eye out for anything that might suit this build, and with headlight options in my mind recently, I spotted this; 20180721_093839 by David Miller, on Flickr I've toyed with this style before but never tried it. It was a tenner, so worth a punt. I got it home, and stripped it all down to get the paint off the alloy face as there was some corrosion under the original finish. A quick polish and clean up of the lenses, and it's back together; 20180721_142531 by David Miller, on Flickr Cant try it on the bike as it's away for welding, but will offer it up when it comes back. I've also decided to make my own rearsets. I've looked at various options, but as I don't need anything fancy, I bought some ally plate for the backing plates; 20180721_142455 by David Miller, on Flickr I can buy pegs and levers separately through ebay. I took pics at Brands a few weeks back of what I aim to achieve; 20180707_134941 by David Miller, on Flickr 20180707_134955 by David Miller, on Flickr I will draw up some templates and get them cut from the plate. Hopefully there will be enough left over for a bracket for the tacho. Dusty

Hi Steve Yea, I was watching that last time it was on. Originally listed at £4900, so the price now is far more attractive. Pros and cons for which engine to use are myriad. I am leaning towards the pv - I bought the 4ce engine originally for this build. If I ended up putting that engine in the Lc I would have a problem using the Lc tacho - I would have to get a servo mount welded in (frame already powdercoated), plus other bits and bobs. Lc has a simpler loom though - less boxes to house unless I go with an aftermarket set up etc etc ! Plus I may sell the yellow project Lc before I even start on it. I bought it on a whim before I got going on this build, and I can only deal with one at a time !! So the Lc engine would go if I sell it, so Pv is looking favourite. I still need to offer it up to the frame when it comes back as I've mocked up with an Lc engine - I know there should be no difference but I would be foolish not to double check ! Dusty

Spectacular progress mate, I agree that the Tie bar bracket needs it's base width as wide as you can get it. This is such a different build, looking soo good.
Following with interest mate

Happy with how it turned out. As for the tie bars because I welded in a new cross tube at the front for mounts I then removed the factory cross member and added the tie bars running foward as in a LC/RZ. Not to worried about weight at this stage and like the 400 wheels although a set of spoke rims should be nice. I’m leaning towards LC as the power plant with some light porting, chambers etc. I’m liking the headlight setup you are playing with be interesting to see how it works out and making your own rear sets is a great idea that way you can make what you are happy with instead of making do with something purchased off the shelf, I bit more work but well worth the effort. Great job really loving it and look foward to your next post. Oh and sorry if I hijacked your thread a bit I will back off this now is your build not mine. Cheers

Hi No hijack - the whole idea of threads is for guys to add there ideas and thoughts, and I'm pleased to hear yours is moving on Sounds like you are able to do a lot of the fab work yourself, which is great. I've had to leave my frame with the engineer again, and he is on holiday this week too So will be late next week before I get it back I expect. Still, there is plenty of other jobs to do. Rearset backing plates don't need to be fancy, but I'm gonna play around with some card templates that may incorporate a bracket for the rear master cylinder. My engineering guy has a plasma cutter that can cut out all sorts of shapes, so a template for those and for a centrally mounted tacho is something I can mess around with. Also going to get the old tyres taken off the Vj21 rims. I've been looking foe a VJ22 rear wheel but there haven't been any for sale for ages, so will probably have to go with the 18" rim from the 21. A few firms still have a listing for the 140/60/18 - Bridgestone being one so not the end of the world. Just got to research if a 21 and 22 wheel are the same width as my ideal is a Metmachex arm with Tyga carrier and small Brembo caliper like I have on my Lc hybrid. The forks have had a final clean up after their rebuild, and are ready to fit, and I lightly polished the top yoke too. I also did the clip ons, which I was originally going to get powdercoated, but the painted finish was so thin that it was easy to rub then down, and I've saved a few quid by polishing them instead. I may cut the ignition "loop" off the top yoke and house the ignition barrel somewhere else, so a bit more work on the top yoke may well be needed. Loads of ideas still rattling around in my head - it's certainly gonna be different !! Dusty

You ever consider making this more than a hobby dusty? You crack on at a fair old rate your builds ( not quite yogi esq but nearly) they are always finished properly which for me is the most important thing and they are always to a high standard. Don’t go all modest

Hi Alex Thanks for the offer mate but the Vj21 wheel should be ok. The biggest issue with 18 inch rims is tyre choice but a quick Google shows a few options available - will double check with the tyre guys when they take the old ones off. Hi Veg- I always considered myself pretty slow to be honest Still haven't finished the orange hybrid !! Having the frame away means I can do some of the smaller bits that would have been done at a later date. I want to get the bike on it's wheels really so I can work a few bits out. Once this next lot of frame mods has been done, hopefully that will be the last time it goes away. I do like to do every last nut and bolt, so it's never quick ! I'll never challenge Yogi as the fast build King !! Dusty

Oh bugger ! Sorry I missed you. I do go for the early bird - they let you in at 7.45 as opposed to 9.30. Never much Lc stuff there although I did see Paul Beaumont who had some Lc stuff on his mates pitch - up near the grandstand. The headlight and the alloy sheet were the only bits I bought. Did you get much ? Dusty

Couple of little jobs today, in and around working and running errands ! I got the 2 old tyres removed from the VJ21 wheels. Tyre guy said Bridgestone list a BT92 for the front and the back - 110/70/17 and 140/60/18, so that's probably what I will go with. I need to get the wheel bearings out, and grind off the wording on the rear wheel spokes as I have with the front, and then I can take them for powdercoating; 20180724_150909 by David Miller, on Flickr Then it will be new tyres, bearings and discs all round. Whilst I was out I popped in to the powdercoating place near me. Had quite a chat with the lad that runs it, and left my 2 clip on tubes and an Lc side stand for him to do in gloss black. I want to see the quality of their work before I commit bigger items but they seem keen to please, and a look inside their large oven proved some good looking work has been done. Pick those bits up on Saturday morning, and may leave the wheels with them then. Dusty

Hi mate Yep, Decorrosion. I'm back there tomorrow morning to pick up a sidestand and 2 clip on bars that I dropped off in the week. I plan to leave my 2 Rgv wheels with them - that will be a real test of how good they are as the alloy on the wheels can gas off when heated, causing bubbles in the finish. If they work out ok then they will get the frame and other parts, plus I have a few bits I want vapour blasting, which they also do. Hi Mark, yea, they are 10 minutes from me - even nearer than Windsor. I laid it on pretty thick about how fussy I am and the lad that seems to run it all - Luke - totally got it. He said he would do the first bits for free but I will pay up for them anyway. Getting the right job done is really important for me and I wont expect it for free. I felt it was a good gesture on his part as he wants my future business. They've been in business a long time - they did my 400 frame at their old place in Feltham, back in 87/88 - it was Luke's grandad that had it then so a family business that's still going today. Fingers crossed !! Dusty

I'm dropping some stuff off tomorrow too for vapour blasting as I need it done yesterday! Want me to pick up your bits? The more he has the cheaper it will be. And they are starting at 4am at the mo and shutting at 2pm because of the heat.

Haha, the pressure is on then !! Dropped the wheels off for powdercoating yesterday. I ground off the wording on the rear spokes too, so hopefully a cleaner look to the wheels. Been collecting some parts this week. Wheel bearings; 20180729_085128 by David Miller, on Flickr I have ordered the sprocket hub bearing too - waiting for delivery of that. Also, a first for me, some Titanium disc bolts; 20180729_085156 by David Miller, on Flickr I usually use stainless but saw these and thought I would give them a go. So light compared to stock ! I have ordered some levers for the rearsets - I need them to be able to draw up a backing plate - they should arrive this week. Hopefully the frame may be ready, although the engineer was away last week so I'm thinking it may be still be sat where I left it ! The new powdercoating place came up trumps with the couple of bits I left them. 2 clip on tubes - which I had straightened slightly, and a spare Lc side stand in gloss black; 20180729_085018 by David Miller, on Flickr Wouldn't take any money either ! Seems very eager to please and a nice lad, so they have the wheels that may be done Wednesday. Then I will drop some parts for Vapour blasting to see how that works out. Will order some brake discs this week - going for normal style as opposed to wavey as I think they will suit the style of the bike better. Dusty

Looks great Dusty! I have a similar set of clip ons on the little RD and am not too sure about them. Just one bolt holding them on means you have to basically torque the buggers down. I might be getting some others with 2 bolts...

The rearset parts arrived today; 20180731_180130 by David Miller, on Flickr I drew up some card templates tonight which I will need to play around with to get right. Need the frame back ideally but it hasn't been touched ! Thought that might be the case but the engineer is back tomorrow so I will chase it up. If the wheels get coated tomorrow I will order the tyres and try and get them fitted before the weekend. Got all 5 bearings now, plus I ordered a new sprocket hub from Suzuki, via ebay as I didn't have one This build lark doesn't get any cheaper does it !! Dusty

Things are moving on a bit now. Enquired about the wheels today, and was told they were ready Last set I had done had some rough areas due to the castings gassing off, and it always annoyed me. Picked these up today, and I'm over the moon - no blemishes or rough bits anywhere; 20180801_162947 by David Miller, on Flickr Really pleased with them. I'm glad I ground off the wording on the spokes. The wheels look so much cleaner. On the way home, I popped into the tyre place and ordered a pair of Bridgestones. They should be fitted Friday as long as the tyres turn up tomorrow. Lastly I dropped in at the engineers. Clive has all the parts ready to be welded on. Maybe ready Friday. Need to get the bearings in the wheels next so the tyre guys can balance them properly. Dusty

Today was a good day for progress. Out early to get the tyres fitted; 20180803_180019 by David Miller, on Flickr 20180803_175957 by David Miller, on Flickr I fitted the new bearings yesterday after putting them in the freezer for a few hours - makes it a bit easier. The tyre guys have done a great job - no damage to the coated rims so happy with that. Then a courier turned up with a new sprocket hub; 20180803_175930 by David Miller, on Flickr Toying with the idea of getting it powdercoated, although not definite yet. I've got a new bearing and seal for it too. Then the Postman turned up with more Titanium disc bolts; 20180803_175915 by David Miller, on Flickr Then another courier turned up, this time with the new discs; 20180803_180013 by David Miller, on Flickr Only fly in the ointment is the rear disc doesn't fit - the id of the hole is slightly too small so will need to investigate that with the seller - fronts are fine though. And then Clive, the engineer rings to say the frame is done Jobs done are sidestand mount; 20180803_175557 by David Miller, on Flickr The back of the mount is beefed up with a 3mm steel plate and small gusset to support it; 20180803_175605 by David Miller, on Flickr Then the torque plate; 20180803_175629 by David Miller, on Flickr And the tabs on the frame it bolts to; 20180803_175615 by David Miller, on Flickr This is pretty heavy duty to be honest and probably not really needed with modern aftermarket pipes, but I wanted something there to help stop movement. I need to sort some spacers for the engine end of the plate and some longer fine pitch bolts. Last job was the lock stops. I wanted these heavy duty too. They are drilled and tapped just in case I need extra adjustment, and are welded on the upper part only so as not to affect the bearing shell on the inside of the headstock; 20180803_175733 by David Miller, on Flickr Hopefully that is all the frame mods done. I'm drawing up the templates for the rearset plates so Clive can Plasma cut them - probably from 8mm ally plate as opposed to the 6mm I bought. I will make other parts from that so it wont be wasted. I now have all the parts to mock up a rolling chassis - just need some time now !! Dusty

Dusty, will your torque plate be rubber mounted in any way?
I’ve never touched RGV wheels myself so can only go by what others have said. Seem to remember though others have mentioned a difference between the RGV250 and GSXR400 rear discs and wheels in the internal diameter?
