When and why did this mod came about? Is it just to look cool or to monitor the colour of the oil??

The legend is that it was a quick and easy way to access the clutch for adjustment / repair, I like the look of it, but don't want to carve up a good cover.

I like the idea in one way but it's got to be weaker than having a complete case, the potential of having to deal with another area/seal and oil leaks is off putting.

There’s not much strength in the bit removed as it quite thin on the casting there.
Oil leaks shouldn’t be a problem with a window with an o ring.

It's for the trick look more than anything. Any real issues would mean the case coming off anyway. Dusty

I do like the visual oil level and condition. Just don’t expect it to stay looking like the colour it was when it went in!
Nice to see if coolant is leaking into the gearbox as well before it’s too late.
Other than that I agree Dusty, primarily for looks. But they do look good.

Jon Are you thinking of coolant leaks from the head gasket or another joint? Another member on hear said that the former isn't possible??

Obviously water leaks from the head gasket aren’t going to find their way into the gearbox. Not quite sure why the other member would even consider that’s what I meant?
The water pump shaft can wear a groove and the seal can fail. Also the joiner o ring for the coolant pipe between the main engine and side case can fail. Best to replace each time the side case is off as it cheap insurance.

I were wrong, I haven't worked on 2 strokes for years now and never actually had one of these engines in pieces.

Any one help with what size is the large o ring under the clear window?

I don't like it. It's too tarty in my opinion. Dry Clutches are for real men
