OK folks, here’s a topic of conversation.
With today’s market value of an RD being sky high, it got me wondering just how prices have risen over the years.
I thought the best way of finding this out was to get you guys to let me/us know. I don’t want prices for basket cases, just all there, road going bikes bought or sold.
I’ll post summarised results up here for all to see.
I’ll start:
March 2001 RD250LC £500 May 2015 F2 YPVS £1600

August 1981 RD350LC £1,150 (bought Bill Smith Motors Chester) May 1983 RD350LC £500 + seized RD400E (sold) October 2015 LC2/N1 bitsa £2500 (bought) March 2016 N1 £5000 (sold) June 2017 RD350LC German import £3600 (bought) Sept 2017 2 x seized basket cases in boxes with no paperwork £0 (collected)
It's all relative - 1981 I was 21 earning £5k/year 2017 and £3600 is a lot less than 20% of my self employed salary
The older you get the more likely you have more disposable income.
I'm looking to buy one of those touring LC's next with worn out barrels, sh@gged tyres, cable pull brakes and a 2 into 1 exhaust system :-) It will be a real eye catcher

Melorp23, your right about it being relative.
I wonder if I can can find out what the increase (or should that really be decrease?) in the value of money over the years. Unless someone already knows? I’m sure the actual value of these bikes has risen above inflation rates, but we’ll see?
While I can put any info in detail with the month and year on a spreadsheet, I’ll just summarise the values by bike and year on here. Not quite so accurate as obviously the’ll be a big difference year on year, but virtually none to a bike bought or sold in December or the following January.
If you don’t know an exact month and date, just estimate. We should of course all know as it’s on our logbooks. Must admit I had to try and find one of mine as it wasn’t where I thought! A good exercise in finding it anyway.

Ah, if only we knew back then?
Still on the realist side, would we really have had the money or space?

Aye, that sums it up for me, yes I enjoy looking at it every time I happen to open the garage door but you can't beat riding it. Back in the day when I first owned one, £600 would get you a fine example, now it's 4 to 5k I guess.

the question is what is the cut off point once they get to high no one will be them like the rd 500 now over price. For me personally 5k were the limit, that's all I could really afford anyway. To think how much of a 'better/newer' bike that amount of money could have got me,....but that's not really the point, I bought one for nostalgic reasons.

If your buying anything classic with a view to making money your a t**t anyway. I've had classics since I started driving / riding, spend fortunes on them and probably broke even, I never buy with a view to making an investment. Andy

Prices are crazy, but i don't think its just RD's or motorbikes, it seems to be anything classic or retro. Have you seen the price of a Raleigh Chopper lately?

Insurance wrote it off never got the chance to keep it for salvage kids wouldn’t let me bring it back home after we all had to bail out of it quick. Prices of anything from the 80’s 90’s is getting ridiculous to replace that escort would probably cost £20,000

Oh no! Disaster mate. 2 door mark 1 rarer than the proverbial rocking horse manure these days and probably never to be replaced again. Looks like the FRS had a go at opening the bonnet the wrong way as well to get to the fire. Lucky no one was hurt though. Hopefully your insurance sorted you out and you can replace with some other classic before the current crazy pricing world knocks everything out of reach.

Here in east Canada I'm still paying around $1000. CAD for complete F1 - F2 for parts or for repair . In the last year I got a black 86 with a shorted CDI , a running blue 86 racer and last month another 86 in boxes with melted pistons . 4L0 are another story , they are now getting hard to find .

Not LC's but myself & 2 mates all bought new Butterfly Blue RD250's in Feb '74 which were £419 each, I was earning £27.50 a week at the time.
