If in doubt always renew, small price to pay for piece of mind, and much cheaper than a broken crankcase.

Built my bike 10 years ago. Changed tyres and chain & sprockets this winter, due to age rather than wear (note to self - ride more). Even though old chain looked fine & didn't pull off sprockets etc, the new kit is much smoother. Roadriders feel good compared to 10 year old BT45s as well.

Sorry no idea why picture did not work try again. Appreciate cant really tell from pictures I would say the chain done over 10k and never been replaced from 2012 when I got the bike which I expect been on for 1 couple of years. I expect top quality set knowing the bike. Where is best to buy M&P etc?

M&P do them as you say, so does Norbo, Yambits, ebay etc etc.

That were unlucky, how fast were you going when it broke? Hope you didn't come off?? To think how many riders ran bikes with old/poorly maintained chains back in the day, not just LC's, all the other popular bikes that us hard up youngsters had. I'm surprised that I didn't hear of a chain snapping more often.

Many bikes now have the option to add an aftermarket case saver, I have one on my XT. just a simple flat piece of ally thats shapes around the chain and stops it taking out the cases. on the XT if it goes it also takes out the oil line connection to the dry sump, not at all ideal... and we think the RDs have it bad when it goes... Here is the XT one so you can see what it looks like:
