I spent some time looking at this today, see what you mean about the threaded plastic part, depending on which of the 4 openings/slots you start it off in, could result in the arm being in a different position. Unless this whole part is worn/knackered on mine, I don't think this is the problem to be honest because I've tried assembling that part 4 ways and either I get what's shown in the first picture, the arm is in it's lowest position yet too close to the casing and no chance of attaching that return spring or how it was/is setup basically. Second picture shows how it looks with the clutch lever out, third is with it pulled in.

Could someone confirm whether or not their LC can be pushed along freely, whilst in first gear with the clutch pulled in.
Try pushing it backwards, I can hear the pistons moving on mine at first,...moving forwards is certainly easier but I don't think it's right.
Having said that, engine doesn't stall when I plop it into gear, bike doesn't feel like it wants to creep forward and I have a defined biting point.

It sounds like your lc is just being an LC. I have a few engines which get played with and chopped and changed from my bike. The one engine i have put the most effort into has a super slick gear change and fairly light clutch action with 3 of Norbo's TZ springs and slightly wider plates with a new nova clutch basket and GENUINE Yamaha cable. When it is cold and not used for a while it has the same symptons as yours the oil i use is GL4 gear box oil. Once started clutch pulled in and rode off it is fine.
I have another 250 engine which when i pull the clutch in drags a little it is all standard with some wear on the clutch basket and to put it into neutral i change up to 2nd and give it a sharp tap down into neutral.
I have now just built a 350 engine up and fitted it to my bike i have not ridden it more than 200 Km's. Last night it was in gear with the motor stopped. I pulled the clutch in and it felt like it was free wheeling when i pushed the bike (no resistance what so ever). This felt very un LC like. The clutch basket is made up of four wider friction plates and three normal plates the springs were a mixture of two different types (i hope) but i do not know what they are. You have seen the clutch basket which i ended up filing even though the last owner started it. i could have used some new parts but i want to save these for something special. i went rummaging though all the spares i have to try and use the best of it. Maybe when every thing has bedded in this one will also be like yours. This one was also difficult to put in neutrals at first but has now slightly improved.

Lol, thanks for your input, maybe your bang on with your first sentence. I know that I had the finding neutral problem with one of my LC's for sure back in the eighties, I can't remember if the other bike were like that too,...I just wonder if that were just one of their quirks as so to speak. On this current bike, that fact that neutral is always easy to find whilst the engine is warming up makes me think that the problem could be due to the clutch plates/oil warming up rather than any gear selector part being the problem as such but then again Norbo sells a modified part so I dunno.

Finding neutral on a running engine is a common issue with these. Think most guys try and select it as they are rolling to a stop. As Toby said, they are all different and you often have to ride around their quirks. All part of their "character" !! Dusty

Thanks Dusty, I suspect that it's 'normal' then,.....I can't help but wonder what the root cause is though.

Neutral selection - favourite is either the height of the peaks on the shift star (too tall), and the strength of the spring on the gear change pawl. Both items can be bought as aftermarket, improved items, or you can mod the shift star yourself but is obviously an involved strip down.

I get the feeling that those mods can be hit or miss though, no guarantee that they will actually solve the problem.
