My project has been delugged and need it to look "clean". Is there a way of bypassing the use of an expansion tank, or any alternatives I can mount near the rad? Cheers Wang

Thing is the water expands when hot then as it cools it sucks some back in , so I would say needed ?
Shorter pipe and locate the expansion tank under the petrol tank if there is room ?

You could get a bespoke ally tank made up - would look quite trick on a race style bike. I had a custom oil tank made for a previous build. I made a cardboard pattern, and sent it to Ellis Fabrication and Welding, in Wrexham. He has a Facebook page with that title. Really nice fella to deal with and very skilled. I was very happy with the result. Your expansion tank wouldn't need to be that big, and I'm sure you could tuck it in somewhere. You could even mount it next to the rad, keeping hose lines short Dusty

Thanks Does the tank need to be mounted above the rad?

Tank can be mounted any where just make sure the pipe which comes from the radiator is always under the coolant level and the tank is vented to atmosphere

The beauty of designing your own is you can put it where you want and make it look exactly how you want. The oil tank I had made needed to be tucked up out of the way as I had de lugged the frame and removed the side panels. I took some measurements, cut up a cereal box and selotaped the cardboard into the shape I needed. I added a cut down drinking straw to show where I wanted a sight tube, more bits of card showed where the mounting brackets needed to be, and then sent the model to Ellis Fab; DSCN3623 by David Miller, on Flickr I would happily recommend his work. He is a very skilled fella; DSCN3673 by David Miller, on Flickr Dusty

Cheers Dusty, might be able to incorporate a little mudguard/tail light mount into that too! and he's not too far away from me either.

I've mentioned this before, but I used a turkey baster on my ccm, simple but effective

too funny! If it works though, who cares? Have you thought of a 125LC one? Alex

It works fine, as been said, all you need is something for the hot coolant to expand into, then return to the rad when it cools down, can be anything.

There are loads of different "catch" tanks on ebay, but they tend to be for cars rather than bikes so a bit on the big side. Where I sited the oil tank meant that it had to be bespoke to fit into the odd shape of the frame. An expansion tank doesn't need to be big like an oil tank though. Dusty

As a 'quick fix' I think the turkey baster idea is a good one, you can get an alloy one too!

When I raced motorbikes I used to have a jogging bottle cable tied to the frame with a small amount of water in so it would expand in and out

Will this work ok in this position for the expansion tank?

You need the pipe from the Rad to enter the tank at its lowest point, wherever its positioned, so when cooled the fluid can return to the radiator.is that an entry point at the bottom? As the two visible spigots further up won't work.

Yes go with that, due to the angle of the tank, it might need to be a quarter full before the level covers the lower pipe, looks like a breather catch can I used in my scooby.
