Always best to buy genuine parts if you can. I bought some about 4 years ago brand new from my local dealer. £25 I think.

Do they ever wear out? Ive a big bag of em and while I pick from the best in the bag, they all seem to be a nice solid fit when building bikes.
Id get original while you still can given the choice.

They do yes - I once bought a pair of YPVS wheels and with the rear laid flat on the floor and a sprocket carrier pushed fully home you could get hold of the sprocket and twist the carrier a good fifteen degrees each way.

You might have small gold mine there Jon
I know when I bought a new set of three they weren't cheap, $28 AUD each, that was last year out of the USA
