Good question, I wondered that too, my first thought that maybe it's an aid for timing/finding top dead centre??

Obviously you can see the welding mentioned in the listing, but don't understand why you wouldn't dress it back to flat, unless it looks like a KIPS 'box' stuck on the side of the barrel. either way it draws your eye to the hideous cover-up.

Shame - it spoils the look of a well finished engine. Any timing equipment surely doesn't need to be left bolted to the bike. If the covers are there to hide the welds, why not shape them to match the barrels ? If it were mine and for whatever reason I couldn't dress the welds back, I would make something that looked like it was supposed to be there - cant say those round discs achieve that, if indeed that is their function ?? With what he has said I reckon the barrels have had the sides cut out them to allow the transfer tunnels to be widened in all directions and the disc covers this
Maybe the disc size is to act like a heat sink to compensate for the loss of some of the coolant passage

I have seen this mod on power valve cylinders at PS tuning. They have brought them to Pieter to be repaired after putting too much heat into the cylinders whilst trying to weld the cylinders up after the porting. They distorted and you can see the cast coming away from the steel liner.
