Hi guys, so I've got my hands on a basket case 500LC, its a jap import if that makes any difference, it seems mostly complete but I want to make it a bit more modern, I know its probably frowned upon by some but I have a few other old bikes all totally original.
So any ideas/ advice on the easier options, I have seen talk of many options including FZR1000 but I don't want to go that far, upside down forks etc is too much for me. I'd like something that is relatively simple, looking not too OTT and still keeping mechanical speedo drives etc. I was thinking along the lines of FZR600 maybe.

Hi would copy the link if knew how to do it. Have a look through this section for my bike under Rich’s modified rd500 posted by richb on Sept 5th 2013. Think this must be one of the easiest and relatively inexpensive and certainly to me works Rich

IMO the Japanese import (RZ) is better than the U.K. supplied models (RD) as they have aluminium frames rather than steel.
I have a really nice set of early FZR forks (RWU) I was just about to put up for sale. I was going to keep them as a YPVS frame came up for sale, but that fell through.
I am half way through adapting the yokes to fit a YPVS (not yours 17again, another set) but could adapt them for RZ500 maybe?

I have a mint black powder-coated FZR600 rear wheel with an old but barely worn Michelin Hisport Radial kicking about in the garage that I could part with. The bearing housings have been bored to take a 20mm spindle, though I don't know what diameter the spindle is on an RZV?

Dymags !! They're expensive but look very nice and are custom made to fit the bike - the improvement in handling is astonishing ! - since the RD500's aren't cheap to restore the Dymag cost pales into insignificance compared to the rest of the bike. If you restore to an high standard a basket case will be more expensive than restoring a bike that is more expensive to buy but is in better condition - the more you can restore yourself the better really since the cost of replacing parts with better ones via eBay is prohibitive. You can save a lot if you're happy to use non standard parts from other bikes - it depends how you feel about originality ?

Dymags would be awesome, but Id rather keep some of that cost for other bits... When I say basket case, I have loosely assembled it and from what I can tell its all there, even got new Bridgestone rubber on it, I think I'll keep all the standard bits, I guess it'll always be worth more as a std RD.
