I was looking at a rd 500 engine put into an Aprillia RS 250 frame last night. Later this got me thinking what are the advantages of having two pipes exiting one side? I like the look of one pipe each side personally.
They seem to mostly be on the right hand side of the bike. Is this true and why?
I have only seen a few tracks but they generally run in a clockwise direction, if so would it not be better for the pipes to exit on the left side of the bike?
Can anyone explain any of these questions

Perhaps it is for road bikes going around roundabouts, which are mainly counter-clockwise on most roads except in UK/OZ/NZ/India etc.

Ground clearance. On the rh side or non chain run side you can sweep the swing arm up and tuck both pipes in for more clearance. You can't easily sweep up the LH side due to the chain etc

The Honda NC30 has exhaust up the left....and chain on the left, but it is a 4 banger :-)

As said it's ground clearance.
The whole point of banana swingarm was to let the pipes be mounted higher up on the non chain side.
I know the nc30 exhaust is on the right but reckon it's 1- to show off the single side swinger and 2- 4 stroke means just a link Pipe, not a chamber on a 2 stroke

Interestingly, The RC30 also has a pipe on the left side, same side as the chain run. The road going VFR has the exhaust on the right hand side.
The reason for the RC30 to have the left hand side was to make it easier for the wheel to be changed in endurance events, something which I can confirm is true. The compromise on the exhaust though, at least for the road version exhaust, is that it has a massive kink put in the link pipe to clear the chain run. Not a bend or thoughtful design, just a massive kink across half the diameter of the pipe..... The race pipes didn't have the kink but needed a raised ride height to give adequate clearance, amongst other things..

The NC30 just followed the design clues of it's bigger brother..

Might be tricky putting the side stand down if they were on the left.
