Hi. Has anyone got a link for an original article on tuning the 350lc that appeared in a bike mag in the early 80's. I think it might have been in the biker about 1983ish. I have seen a copy of it on the internet about 10 years ago but can't remember where I saw it.

Hi. No it was in the biker Jan 1983 and I have just found a link to it on tz350.net. It was called something like the $35 tune up and was an excellent guide.

I have this book in front of me right now... is it just the tuning article you are after? - I could take it to work and scan the pages if you wish?
Drop me a PM if you do

Never seen that before...ta OEB
Btw, when I removed the mesh, I did not cut right through the exhaust, I left a bit and just bent it open... made it a bit easier to align n weld.
Ta again.

Thanks for the offer robin. I tuned my bike following this guide back in 1983 and need the guide to Remind myself what I did all those years ago! It made a big difference. I tested it at long Marston drag strip and got 12.83 standing start quarter mile after tuning which I thought was pretty good for a cheap tune up for a road bike.

just seen those, nice scans Robin.
Reminded me Id read these ages back and how little they and the article above actually did, citing that no gains could be had most of the time and that yamaha had it mostly right, hmm....

I have not done this mod, so can't speak for any gains, but I have had my top end "blue printed" to make sure its all within the Yamaha Tolerances for piston to bore fit, making sure the bore is concentric and true in the barrels, just that added a little, but more importantly made sure everything is working efficiently, as Mr Yamaha intended. A set of TSA pipes and a Zeel added more than the article claimed without have to use a file or a dremel!

Just to clarify this. Yamaha did have it mostly right as there were many things that the authors of the article tried that gave no power increase. However the few simple and cheap things that they did do in the article that did actually work gave a massive gain of 11 bhp as show in their dyno graph. I think the point was that there was very little they needed to do to get that extra gain and a lot of stuff that others were doing at the time that was totally unnecessary. That is why I thought this was such a great article.
