Hi everyone,
Just thought I would introduce myself.
Originally from Kent I now live in Switzerland and have just bought a 250 4L1.
Pretty much original just needs a bit of a tidy up or so I thought. Picked it up yesterday and half way home it seized solid at 80 kph,
luckily I'm of an age (56) that used to ride 2 strokes back in the late 70s so knew what to do (clutch in coast to a stop). So now
it sits at a breakdown yard from where I will fetch it on Tuesday. Oh well I did want a project!
It registered here in Switzerland as a vintage machine so that's a maximum of 3000kms per year and an inspection every 6 years
(like an MOT).
Safe riding Ian (Jarvy)

Well you sure squeezed the full gamut of emotions into your first day of returning to two stroke ownership didn't you and they sure can be cruel mistresses eh?
Hope you get it sorted swiftly without too much expense and welcome to the fold.

Top end all good so engine is now out on the bench.
So still not sure why its seized. No overheating before hand, no odd noises that would indicate
bearing failure it just stopped.
Will split the cases when the manual arrives just winging it so far!

I am still awaiting some tools to fully strip the engine but in the mean time I have a question. On taking out the air filter I found it to be perished with a big part of it missing. So having checked every where what damage would the lumps of foam do to the engine?

I think you may know the answer to that question I fear

The foam itself won't do any damage but the weak fuel mixture will make it run lean and potentially seize

With a weak mixture wouldn't the top end seize first? No marks in the top end and plugs look ok. Looks like a rebuilt crank then only trouble is not sure about that here in Switzerland. So then next question is anyone know of some where in the SE of England that can rebuild the crank in a few days as I do get back regularly?

If the top end is OK then a main bearing would be my first thought
If they are left not running the bearings can pit
They initially seem fine but will self destruct soon after
Could be oil starvation so ideally get the pump checked/rebuilt. Arrow on here does it very reasonably
As for crank rebuild either pjme in Wolverhampton or Grampian motors in Liverpool.
Both these are in the Midlands unfortunately but Grampians will usually turn a crank around in 24 hours and ship back

Ok then its the right main bearing. It seems to have self destructed as midlifecrisisrd said as it seems to have been stood a while.

So do I just buy a new crank, it seems a lot easier to buy a nice new one from PJME than shipping the worn one to the UK and having it rebuilt and shipped back.

The thing is it should be cheaper to get it rebuilt as hopefully the website will be reusable
At £40 a Web it adds up.
Unless the bearings Have spun or the taper and keyway on the flywheel side are damaged

About 1 1/2 hours from Bern. Only asking as we have chaps that drive back and forth to the UK, might have been able to take some bits back for you. One drove back this morning. Currently commisioning a test train for SPB.
