What do the plugs look like? Lean? 80 km is not the problem how bad do they treat a race motor.

Hmmm not good mate . as said when its rebuilt give it a leak down test. is the ignition rotor the correct one for a 31k motor the pick up looks long. I will have a look at the rotor on my 31k motor ,it my be just me my memory playing up on me. years ago had a similar event on my LC same sort of speed . I was messing about with a pair of bored out Tzr carbs . tried for years to get it to run right ,last year put std carbs and cable on and got rid of the bloody things Lol.

as above could of been a lot more serious than a hole in a piston ..

is the ignition rotor the correct one for a 31k motor the pick up looks long. That was the first thing I looked at, it's a long time since I rebuilt mine, so can't remember either, looks like a trigger has fallen off in the pic, so doubt that would cause a hole in the piston, might be worth checking the ignition system, and compatability of all the components together, as it seems a minefield of what works, if things have been swapped etc.

Sorry to see that, but as the guys say, you kept it upright. Hard to feel good after something like this happens but if it had spat you off at 80mph, well, that doesn't bare thinking about. Throw a sheet over it, forget you even own an Lc, and do something else for a week or 2, then come back to it and see how you feel. Works for me !! Good luck Dusty

Really sorry to hear about this. As the guys say, you walked away unhurt, which is the main thing.

A leak down test is compulsory before running a new engine if you want it to stay in one piece! Certainly looks like an air leak/major lean condition. Hopefully the crank will be okay after a clean.
As above, just take a break for a week or two, then strip it down and assess what needs doing. Rebuild, then do a leak down test.
Good luck

It's gutting, but only an engine at the end of the day. Mine popped last November and I'm only just getting round to doing something about it now. Put it in the garage and forget about it for a while!
Looks like that pot was running lean to me - I've got a few pistons in my collection with similar damage!

I hope they were not Yambits crank seals! The left crank seal failing could cause a major lean condition on left cylinder, as it could allow extra air into the left side.

gutted for you pal, could've been worse though. These bikes can be frustrating but they are worth the hassle!
