So I have managed to mess up the installation of the headstock bearing cup on my LC restoration. As can be seen from the pic, the cup has seated on one side but not the other. So the question is: introduce frame to a hydraulic press and force it to seat on the other side too; or remove the bearing cup and start again? Knowledgeable advice gratefully received!

Hi, I would say knock it back out nice and evenly and start again. Check the "housing" for nics or high spots etc and remove them with emery cloth or something like that. Put the cup/shell in the freezer for an hour or more before you fit it, in an attempt to shrink it a bit. I made a brass tool to fit mine with, so you can draw them in with a lump of screwed rod. A roller bearing is a much more manlier bearing than a ball bearing ! :-) steven.

If you are fitting taper races, have you put a couple of small notches inside the headstock so you can get a pin punch to them if you ever need to remove them again?
