Hi, While buggering about in the garage, I found my old Gunsons Colortune in a box. I bought this circa mid 80,s, but never found them to be much good, any changes made to carburetion never seemed to make much of a difference in colour, but mabey that was just me..........I didnt know they still made them. I put it on one of my old Villiers engines and fired it up tonight to make a video of it. Here are a couple of quick videos I made, one with the light on and one with it off, for effect. Haha, I took mine t my mates workshop a few weeks back to tune an old mini he had in there. he has all the modern gear but we wanted to show the young whippersnappers how it was done in the past. they all thought we were mad, but they loved seeing the flame and totally got it. We also tuned my XT500 with it late last year, my mate had never seen one so i took it in to do that. with the AFR up its exhaust we tested the changes by colour and the reading, it was surprisingly accurate, hence why he liked it. They didnt sell em in Aus, and everyone whos seen it wants one now. I could be a rep I reckon and make a fortune lol. sadly nothing modern has carbs, so the market is limited LOL! Our next thing is to wire up his 80s/90s proper huge car analyser that cost $50k when it was new (worth precisely zero now of course) to our bikes and see what it says, thing has all the extras and the kit so will be interesting to see what it says on the bike.

Still got the one my Grandfather passed on to me in 1978, I didn't think they were compatible with two strokes, due to the oil in the combustion process?

Remember them back in the day, and used them a couple of time's on old carb'd cars, as above though thought they were not suited to 2 strokes.

I was given one with a toolbox but was too scared to use it lol I think I only threw it away a couple of years ago. there's an ebay seller who's sold over 2,000

My '79 Lotus had 2 twin choke dellortos on it, so 1 choke per cylinder.
Used to set it up with 4 colourtunes all in at once. Looked really pretty in a dark garage.
As well as mixture, you could balance the carbs also, aim for the same amount of fire in each cylinder.
Still got one somewhere I think.

Great for calibrating carbs where a single fueling adjustment positions curve for the whole power range, so by adjusting the idle mixture all else follows and falls into place. Unfortunately not that convienient for multistage fueling circuits as you would have to hold head near then engine on full power/revs on road or dyno!
In the war they used a similar 'colour tune' technique for adjusting plane fueling. Block tested them at night with engine on full chat and then adjust fueling based on colour of flame from exhaust stubs for optimum power..
Something like this...seems to be at just a bit past idle
