So after I discovered that my 3 year 2000 miles since rebuild engine does not hold pressure i reluctantly pulled it apart. No mater how much I like spending time in the workshop this is not fun as I prefer to ride at this time of the season.
So what went wrong? Why did my engine start leaking? Here is what I found that might help the inexperienced builder (I'm one).
1. I had a look at the sealant I used when it was build and the expiration date was 06/2012. It was expired when I used it and god knows how it has been stored before I bought it. The sealant was Michel Instant Gasket and it is the last I will ever use. 2. During disassembly I noticed that some of the bolts felt loose. I did paint the cases during rebuild and it seems that the paint under the washers was squashed and worn so the nuts seem to have lost torque. 3. I noticed that the case thru studs were contaminated with some kind of glue (thread locker), I tried to run the nuts on them and the nuts were very stiff. As a result less torque is applied when doing the cases.
So, use fresh threebond not cheep crap from china, mask the areas under the bolts and nuts when painting cases, clean the studs and run all the nuts down before assembly to verify that there is no excessive friction.
Cheers
