Went to Painters about getting the tank and panels done and told him about the carbon panels and he said that there could be problems with painting over the gelcoat
Anyone had issues or is it good to go ?

I have all the same panels and I am looking at getting it painted soon, my painter hasn't flagged it yet however dusty mentioned this when he spoke to mark cordwell who flagged it as an issue. The other alternative that I am weighing up is to get them wrapped what scheme are you having? Mine will still show some of the carbon off.

Having Kenny Roberts yellow and the eagle on the side, so for side panels I will only have the lower bit showing in carbon and maybe the speed blocks on the tail piece showing the carbon through

Ok let us know how it goes be interested to see, has your painter expanded on why it may be a problem other than a reaction to the gel coat?

Strange reason, lots of kit cars, Lotus's and modern stuff have a gel coat finish. As well as aftermarket fairings etc??

Hi Yea, Mark mentioned it to me, but didn't reference any supplier of panels in particular. I was going to provide a brand new carbon Rgv mudguard for him to paint, but he has had issues with the carbon "bleeding" through the paint after a few months. I didn't want to chance it so gave him a standard Rgv muddie which I had. For a definitive answer give him a ring - he's a nice guy and will happily point you in the right direction I'm sure. Dusty

Anyone had issues or is it good to go ? rather than take a chance why don't you put up a swap ad and see if anyone has a set of standard panels to swap ..

Wasn't it Geary or someone who used to be on here have their carbon panels painted over in the Kenny colours ?

You can paint over carbon with no problems at all, as long as the surface is prepared correctly. Some painters may have had problems in the past with tiny airbubles in the surface of the resin, (pinholes). If your painter is concerned, why dosent he scotch the part, then clear coat the part to seal the surface, then mask and paint the required areas leaving the carbon areas to show. You also mention carbon bleeding through, do you mean the "weave pattern print" is visible after a while in the paint. If so then their probably was insufficient resin on the surface on the part to start with. As in direct sunlight the resin will shrink (thin in the thicknes of the resin) over time, so this might be what your describing.? I Hope this helps. Best regards Johnny C. www.vskcorrinaldi.co.uk/

Is it possible to ask him how he prepped the carbon ?

I've sent a message. I'm not planning on a reply. You know what painters are like ๐ฑ

Yeah painters, you tell them what you want or give them photos and they ignore both LOL
Found this QUOTE yes it can but its not so simple it really depends if its real carbon fibre ie pre preg stuff thats been autoclaved or cheapie carbon cloth in a polyester resin. The latter is easiest as its really just the same as fiberglass (grp) but the former is a bit of a bugger its hard to get a chemical bond, and paint tends to chip easily due to the surface having a very poor ability to flex and absorb the energy of a stones impact
So need to know what our panels are made of ?

All i can say is the panels are real carbon carbon twill , a lot of race cars are made with a carbon shell and are painted Yes geary did paint his back panel in Kenny Roberts and ive seen lots of muddy s RGV that have paint on them Last one was Spondon chris on his sponden at Manchester so id say if its done right you can paint them . I hope so as im planning on painting my set. Other then that i cant reoly say as ive not had a set painted my self but as i say if prept correct i cant see a problem .

Generally pre preg stuff isn't as shiney as its has a lot less resin on it. Also the surface finish isn't as good as its more structural than wet lay. The reason the weave shows through it that the paint sinks into the surface unless you put a lot of primer on and this makes it more susceptable to chipping. I am pretty sure they will be wet lay if they are bike panels

Right I have finally tried the carbon panels out on the bike for fitment and the right side doesn't fit !!!
It looks like the rear bracket for the 2 stroke tank is in the way and I will have to either trim the panel which IMO will weaken it around the bottom peg mounting or remove the bracket on the frame as I'm building a Hybrid and will run pre mix, but not everyone will be able to do this
Anyone come across this ?

Try and keep your oil tank. Plug it at the outlet, fillit with oil and you wont need bottles of oil stuffed in your jacket. A big syringe from Boots will draw the oil out of the top of the tank at fill up time. Gotta be the easiest eay with a premix bike. This is what ive always done with premix bikes. Must be easier to sort the panel than hack the frame.
