I've been offered a 1981 250LC which is in boxes and needs full rebuild, repainted, the full monty. Is £1000 about right for it or am I being too stingy?

Still be as stingy as you can without letting it go. Your signature made me laugh and think maybe a 250 would be best for you. Ha Ha.

Personally think you'd be better off buying a complete bike, I bought a project in box's only to find that most of the parts in the box's were knackered and fit for nothing. Mine cost £600 if that helps, uk bike with matching numbers.

If its complete, then buy it, especially if matching numbers. You would only strip it down anyway so will save you a few hours!

After you have checked it over, ask yourself, will i enjoy restoring it and i don't mind spending a £1000.00 + getting it sorted? If not- buy a ready to ride example.

Probably cheaper than finding all the bits to build one up, even if you have to refurbish everything, I'd be interested if you decide not to
Happy new year by the way, will pop in sometime soon for a blether
Cheers

The thing is it's a gamble, so it could go either way in terms of whether it's a good deal or not. It really depends on whether you don't mind taking risks, so to put a value to a pile of bits isn't possible IMO. Ok, a grand sounds reasonable, but no-one knows the condition of these parts and what unforeseen problems there might be.
Whatever you decide, good luck.

Sounds to good to be true, but if you have contacted the seller and it's as described to your satisfaction i would buy it before someone else snap's it up.

I paid £500 for mine 5 years ago which was in boxes , cost quite a few quid since , I would try and get a bit knocked off and then if its got a V5/matching numbers buy it.
