Hi from Colorado USA, New forum member here. I have a 1981 lc 4LO that came out of Canada. I have restored this bike from the frame up. lots of work as you all know. My crank seals went south so I split the case and it looks like the tolerances for the crank and con rods have gone south also. Nobody has parts for crank for the 80-83 4LO on this side of the pond. My question is, PJ Engineering has a complete crank for 315 pounds. Drop in, all you need is the crank seals. What say you all?
I tried to post a picture, but it is too hard to do (or haven't figures it out) and the tequila was calling.
Thank you forum members. Blair...........

Hi Blair Welcome to the forum mate Pjme have a good reputation over here. I have used them for about 4 or 5 crank rebuilds in the past and have always been very happy with the results. As Bare says, if you can find someone nearer home it may save you some money, plus I never like the idea of a newly built crank being posted. I've seen how some parcels get handled by postal services and they don't always handle them with care If you have no other option then a crank from PJME will be a good buy. And needless to say, use genuine Yamaha crank seals. Good luck and enjoy the forum. Regards Dusty

Hey Blair, I just completed an RD350LC build in NM (Canadian 4Y3), not too far from you... I used a new crank from PJME, and was VERY pleased with the crank from them, it was spot on. I also used Scott Clough in California for my top end machining, and although not quick (he's a very busy guy) I was quite happy with his work. I had to source a lot of parts from the UK, and Norbo, the site proprietor here provided a lot of it. Also, all the expertise on these bikes is located right here on this forum, so if you have any questions, the lads here will get you through whatever issue you're having.

Thank you all, never thought about the postal people tossing that crank around Dusty. Still, I would still have to order most of the parts from GB to get the rebuild done. There is a shop in Arizona, CrankWorks, that will rebuild and balance for $950 and I still have supply the parts, seems a little high to me. Got an email out to Scott Clough to see what he can do to fit me in and pricing. One more question, is balancing the crank on these 4LO's worth the cost? Thanks.

FWIW, the crank I received from PJME was VERY well packed, and when I set it up in the V-blocks and got an indicator on it, it ran true within a half-thousandth of an inch at the shafts, pretty damn good I would say for having been shipped halfway around the world. I looked at the cost of the parts (PJME uses only high quality Jap bearings webs and rods) and it worked out to be much cheaper than having my existing worn crank rebuilt here. I opted for the upgraded silver cage small end bearings which I think are a good move in a two-stroke. I looked at crank works but given the cost, I couldn't justify it for a street motor. If I were building a truly hi-rev racing motor I might consider it, but I think that with the degree of other variables present in the system, unless you're going to line bore and totally blueprint your cases the degree of overall superiority of a dynamically balanced crank would get lost in the weeds on a motor like this. Better to spend that money on some good porting and blueprinting on your cylinders and head, as you WILL be able to see and measure the difference there (dyno). Just my $.02 Gordo

Thanks Gordo, your right about adding all the costs up. Not going to race this bike, just want a good long term runner. Plus with all the seals and gasket being shipped along with the crank, post was only 105 pounds. That's cheaper than shipping for crank alone to Cali. Porting will be done. Thanks to everyone, I'll keep you all updated. Blair.....

Welcome to the forum. As I live in Switzerland I also had the same problem. All the good stuff is in the UK and after my crankshaft bearings failed I opted to just buy a brand new one from PJME along with the genuine seals. It arrived well packaged and undamaged. Will one day get the original crank either rebuilt (in the UK) or sold for rebuilding.
