Well i never saw this coming……. About 10 + years ago some arse stole my yamaha wr 400. Today the misses had a visit from the police saying my bike has been found in Hertfordshire. There wanting me to go collect! Ive no idea of its current condition although i doubt its as it was. Problem is my insurance company paid out so they own the bike but the police say it still shows as I'm the registered keeper? I can't even tell you who i was insured with at the time as i finally chucked all the paperwork out last year along with the standard exhaust ect id been hoarding lol.
Any ideas on what course of action i should now take?

It's got to be a right mess now and I wouldn't bother bur worrying it's still in your name
Can the DVLA be contacted to void this ?

collect it and worry about it later! at worst you can break it, at best get it on the road

I may still have the original number plate somewhere so i could contact the dvl a about it. But legally it belongs to the insurance co but as i no longer have any paperwork and couldn't begin to tell you who i was insured with 11 or 12 years ago i don't know how to go about contacting them. Maybe the police still have it on record who i was insured with. Probably my best course of action..

As you said, it doesn't belong to you, so you have no claim on it, and it would possibly be theft?? Had the same happen to me, I had a Mk1 Golf Gti stolen, and a call several years later to say it had been found, but as I'd been paid out, nothing I could do, as it wasn't my property.

see it as recycling, its only going to clog up a police compound. i will happily collect and take my chances on it! the insurance company wrote it off years ago.

Go pick it up............worry what to do later. If its in good nick you're a winner. You have no intent to do anything dishonest, so sort any problems out after you've got it back. As long as you are up front about every thing, should not be a problem, after all, the police WANT you to collect it!!!!!! Cant see you being prosecuted for following orders from the law.

Worse case scenario insurance company come take it away , If it puts u outta pocket to do so I wouldn't count on u being reimbursed for the trouble though...

Yep go and get it, apply to dvla for a v5. They will either send you one or write to you telling you the correct information. Then you'll know. I reckon you'll be lucky. Good luck

I had exactly this with a SOHC CB750. Not quite as many years. I contacted Norwich Union, who had paid me out, They paid for a pickup truck to bring it back to my house.
It was well abused, so I didn't want it, they just let me have it gratis. I broke it & got a load of £ back, which I kept.

Well that's interesting, I will endeavour to find out which company was involved then post up my results. Thanks for the replys.

I had my RD500 written off in a smash many years ago. The insurance paid me up, but left me with the bike which was still in my name. I was leaving for Australia so I flogged it to a mate for the cost of the excess, he put it back on the road and then he sold it on... I hope the insurance don't want the f**ker back!

if its registered to you how are the insurance company going to know you got it back, all you have to do is tell the dvla its been recovered, the only poss prob i can see when you go to insure it, the worst that can happen is the tow truck arriving

I'd get it back, hold it for a while, devise a cunning lan in the meantime, and if all quiet after a while, put the plan into action. Could always be upfront and honest, it'll more than likely cost them more to collect and store/dispose then what its worth to them, if anything after being written off.

if you hold the title then you are the registered keeper, but that doesn't mean you are necessarily the owner, if you have the reg number then the quickest way to find out is to ring an insurance company up for an insurance quote, it will flag up if there is a problem and they will tell you so, if not, then your in the clear, then either repair and keep, repair and sell, or just break it for parts

Go collect it and see how it is
Then do a check on the register number and see if it actually shows as stolen, may be too long ago
There will be a record of the pay out somewhere on the insurance data Base, proper hpi check should show it
Chances are they will tell you to keep it and take the marker off.
When I hpi checked my fazer (knew it was cat d) it showed the details along with a marker from a finance company showing it was tied to an hpi deal from years ago. Called them and they took the marker off.
