I have a 4LO 1981 with a problem on the left cylinder ; it will start ok and tick over but as soon as you increase the revs it pops and bangs .
I have put new plugs in ; also swapped them from cylinder to cylinder ; I have swapped the plug leads from cylinder to cylinder .
I have cleaned the carbs .
I think it may be an electrical problem ; anybody have any ideas ?
cheers john

Could be a few things. Have you set up the float heights?

Could be a few things. Have you set up the float heights? it was running fine last year before i laid it up for the winter .
I Cleaned the carbs out for the seasons use and now it wont run ; it feels/sounds like electrics because it does not "die" it spits ; pops an bangs

I had mine laid up for a long time and cleaned the carbs out to get it running and it was missing on one cylinder. In the end i had the carbs off about 6 times. Each time stripping them and blowing them through with an airline. Only on the last time did i actually take out the emulsion tubes and clean them as well and something must have shifted because that cured the problem. Been nice and crisp ever since mate. I know describing yours as popping and banging makes it feel like it would be electrical and something could have failed but dont forget it was ok before you laid it up. I would defo check those carbs again

sounds rather like the problem i had with mine,it turned out to be the stator that was at fault, had to get the low speed winding re done, runs like a dream now, you can test the stator if you have a multimeter, i think you will find a few posts on here with the ohms readings you should be getting, i belive its the insulation on the windings that breaks down over time.
