Starts without choke redlines on stand, doesn't want to know when riding, everything stock. Pulls perfect in every gear below 5, sometimes can hear a hiss of backfire maybe? Plug chop is spot on at 5k, was imported from Germany and only taken carbs off to clean the bodies really. Know it could be a multitude of things but what 1st guys?

Could be the high speed windings in the stator.

Will pop another stator on although this 1 was tested ok, will strip carbs and clean and see what happens.

sounds like you have an earthing issue with your indicators which could cause a draw on your stator/ignition windings and reduce the voltage for the spark

Check CDI too. If you have a spare, swap it out.

Quick update as not touched it, ran it up to temp just now, started straight away and ticked over nicely, revved cleanly on stand but I didn't take it out, all the ohms in the manual were at least met some higher, so does that give the stator health the all clear or does higher = bad?

Yes, think of it like a wire has gone thin, the resistance will be higher than standard.

Higher resistance = lower voltage

So 1 of the numbers was about 280 in the Haynes manual and mine when hot was at around 350 so 20% or so higher, I'll take it I need to swap the stator? I have another that when I tested it straight after off the bike ie cold was at 240, worth a go?

350 sounds way too high IMO. Try the swap.

You will need to set the timing up again, 2mm BTDC.

350 ohms means its done, 240 cold is just about ok, try warming it carefully with a heat gun/hair drier and watch the reading climb
Also, as mentioned, when you swap it, be sure to re-time your engine up to 2mm BTDC, don't guess it, that will end in tears

Maybe back to square 1? Did the ride out yesterday, after 30 miles it came back, stopped for an ice cream (obligatory) then it was ok for the next 20 miles home? Could I be plagued with yet another (albeit slightly less knackered) stator or should I be looking elsewhere? CDI Rectifier Coils etc? Bloody flies when on song just had this 1 flutter.
