Painted a set of wheels with a polished edge and having major issues getting a clean line between polished face rim and flat painted section. (the spokes are perfect not issues).
I am getting paint chipping back etc meaning re-masking and painting. Just wondered if any tricks that's been found ie. blade around the edge or should I have painted part of the edge then use a blade to cut back etc.....touchup edge with paint after.
I expect the edge will be crap after polishing the rim after normal use in any case but would appreciate any feedback so as not to waste any more time and paint!
Perhaps I am trying to get perfection when its not possible.

I masked the edges with a non bleed tape the trimed it with a sigle egded razor blade so just the pollished egde was masked . After painting pull the tape when the paint has tacked off try not to leave it till its dry and use a good quality polyurathane 2 part paint if you can , yacht paint is excellent .

I used regular black insulation tape , it forms into the concave shape of the rim, and leaves a cleaner edge than masking tape. Just as also said use some pinstripe tape to make a tight edge , than use any masking tape to cover the main parts.

Thank for above I think the error I made was priming and painting Upton the edge now got some edge damage. Looks like masking and redo rim section going to get some fine tape as suggested cheers

I brush painted mine. No masking tape but painted right on to the polished rim but featherd it off with the brush. Cut the edge back later with 600 wet/dry and re-polished.

Sighh. Use a wee paintbrush and simply paint the silly wheels. NO masking. Use a solvent wetted rag and wipe off any/all misses. Dead Simple. Masking to spray the paint on is a Foolish waste of time.. better spent Imbibing :-) Ohhhh brush method 'at least' equals the OEM Paint job. Try it?

Ah bare ,what you are saying is 2 and a bit hours relaxing masking time on each wheel is time wasted /down the drain .

I brush painted mine. No masking tape but painted right on to the polished rim but featherd it off with the brush. Cut the edge back later with 600 wet/dry and re-polished. Bit different but I sprayed my KR1S wheels and masked with normal masking tape then wet and dried the rough edge back to good

I had mine blasted at my local powder coaters (LSN), polished the shiny/brushed bits first, sprayed the lot with BBQ paint, and carefully wiped the paint off the shiny/Brushed bits with some panel wipe saturated cloths in-between each coat. Sod masking. I used to do that and I realised my life was slowly ebbing away.......masking. Chuffed with the results. It was loads quicker and infinitely less boring that masking.

Im the other way, I decided masking was the way forward after I spent too much time wiping away overspray
