I had a set of pipes made by Gibson for my 400AC
For the sort of money I handed over I expected a lot better quality & service When I ordered them the first question I asked was do they fit ok with the centre stand (answer yes) did they hell I had to take a hammer to the stand its better but will never fit properly with the pipes. Pipes where touching the rear shock mounts as well. So had to shave the mounts to get them to fit Chrome is so thin the slightest knock and it chips off.
Every time I phoned them I found them unhelpful to the point of being rude.
Was told 10 weeks but ended up being 12 THEN it’s another 2 weeks to get them chromed (if that’s what they call the SH-T shinny stuff they stuck on them)
A mate of mine had a set made for his 350LC and asked the same question about the centre stand and was assured they would be fine. Well they weren’t fine and didn’t fit properly.
I would say if you want some pipes made go elsewhere to spend your money.

Russ, strange you've had a bad experience of Gibson's.
Out of interest when did you get them done?
I had a set made for LC about 2 or 3 years ago and the chrome is still perfect. Centre stand fitted to.
Last set I had made I took the bike up to make sure they fitted as it was modified.
That said, I know he has got a YPVS setup to mock the pipes on, but not seen an air cooled one so maybe the fit is different.

Perhaps they are using a different chromer?
I always thought that to chrome a pair of pipes for £170 was a bit cheap.
Chrome seems to cost an arm and a leg these days.

Had a pair of ypvs small cans in chrome from them a few years ago.
Did not fit well. Had to file the rear mount holes as pipes sat higher.
They do make them on a jig but if an individual bike has engine mount out by even 1mm it throws out the pipe angle. I took it that my bike sat slightly out.
Got them to send another pair of manifold stubs that had not been welded up so I could get them welded to suit. They did offer to check them but I thought stubs were the best way forward.
To be honest the chrome was thin in places. First time it got wet rust spots appeared on the rear mount welds.
They are chromed to a price so if you want show quality chrome buy them bare and get them done you self but expect to part with a large wad of cash.

I bought a set 3 years ago waited 8 weeks and when i called them they said the chroming was delayed , i didn't order chrome but natural state, A week later a set arrived that had obviously been bouncing around the workshop , the left hand pipe had a dent and the right had a hole that i welded up. I asked for a couple of gibson decals never got a reply . I will not be reordering from them , if i buy more it will be kennys

my experiance ordered black chrome smallcan allspeeds from gibson great comunication six week turn around, however after unwrapping i was well pissed off two dints in one exhaust after two phone conversations i had to send back for replacements.the strange thing was the dints in the right hand exhaust matched up to brake pedal and footrest brackets like they had been fitted to an lc and knocked somehow even tony agreed or accused me of hamfisted fitting.which i swear i never did,no damage at all to other pipe no dints in box so i think they had them returned and sent them onto me,he told me they would have to make another set which would take 6-8 weeks funny though i had new ones resent inside two weeks.... nigel

I've never bought new pipes from them, but they have modified a number of existing sets for me over the years. Tony has Always been very helpful and done exactly what I needed on time & on budget.

Well here's my 400 A/C and there's no way in a million years the centre stand is going to fit? look how tight it is against the rear shock mount, I had to take the domed nut off and cut some stud off to clear the exhaust, & look at how tight it is going through the foot peg mounts. The black chrome does look nice on a LC Copper99 but it looks like you’re not using a centre stand ? I wonder if you were would they still fit ?? Anyway judging by the post so far the cons out way the pros, spend your money elsewhere.

Russ, I can't do anything about the pipe finish for you, but they look okay in the photos.
However, if your problem with the centre stand is purely the foot peg clearance, I could cut and weld that to clear easily. Let me know if you want me to do this for you as I know your only up the road from me.
As said before all bikes are totally different tolerances once everything is bolted together. I expect when they were made, if something didn't look right another part was tried until it fitted.
That's why it's best to get pipes made for a bike by taking it to a maker to have them fitted, even if the bike is standard.

As far as centre stand pic goes..looks like the bike may have fallen over or been down the road at some time, as it looks bent in to me, easy fix a bit of heat, may be wrong just my thoughts

looks to me like your rd400 pipe needs to rotate slighlty on it's axis on the header/downpipe which would move the lower chamber in towards the frame fitting into the foot peg and centre stand better and at the same time moving the Silencer/can section away from the swing arm. which would imply that the the rear mount bracket is welded on in the wrong position in relation to the circumference of the chamber if that makes sense.
