Hi All
I've recently got some allspeeds that need refinishing. Going to get them blasted and paint them myself - chroming / ceramic coating too expensive.
So, I've been looking at past threads on here and opinion seems to be divided on what works best, and I thought I'd get a few more opinions before making a decision.
What I gather...
Original PJ1 is no longer available, and the reformulated stuff you can get isn't much cop.
Plastikote BBQ paint isn't resistant to petrol.
Techcote VHT seems to have worked for a couple of people, but there's some doubt as to whether it is petrol resistant, perhaps dependent on how well it is cured?
Simoniz / Sperex VHT - not too much info about it, A couple of other forums have mentioned it, people seem to have got a good finish but no info about petrol.
Any other options?
Also, the pipes have a couple of small dents that I'll fill before painting. J-B Weld seems to be the preferred option for this job. High-temp or ordinary stuff (the dents aren't on the headers)?
Cheers - David

I used Duplicolor Ceramic (this is the Australian name) rattle can on mine with no issues including fuel, you've got to cure it though
Colour was Ford semi gloss after a primer application
Paint is rated to 260 celsius

I've had no problems with the bbq satin black , mainly as I end up painting them every year till I find a filler that doesn't start lifting ,, I'm going for the jb weld this year ,, fingers crossed but knowing my luck I'll find he cure then spill petrol on them !!

Simoniz Engine Enamel all day long for me, did my cases with it and my Allspeeds , great finish and petrol resistant , I hung mine overnight beside my boiler to cure the paint, worked well.

I found the B&Q BBQ paint is OK - I only had a couple of small scrapes to fill which I did with Quick metal after I sand blasted the pipes. Still looks good after a year - only about 900 miles. One of the old threads suggested curing the paint with a hot air paint stripper - with the pipe touch dry I hang it up with wire and then stick the air gun in the end held in place with wire turn ed it on and left it for an hour. worked really well (so far)!

I've been thinking Simoniz might be the way to go. So you used the engine enamel rather than the 'normal' VHT stuff? What colour did you use? Had a quick look and the options seem to be gloss black, matt black or aluminium, no satin. Cheers - David

Sorry I used the engine enamel on my cases and barrels and the vht stuff on my Allspeeds, a wee pic of the finish I got on my cases and barrels
The Allspeeds are over at my ol mans garage, I got the Simoniz VHT Gloss for them, they look great, no pics as yet though.

That colour is about what I'm looking for on the pipes, but from what I've read I don't think the engine enamel would last too long on the headers. I'll give the satin VHT stuff a go I think. Have you done many miles with the allspeeds? If so, how's the paint holding up? Cheers - David
