hi, need some help/advice on bleeding a 55 plate transit. I fitted a new fuel filter and am struggling to get it to run. tried a couple of things, filling filter, cracking injectors while turning over etc, I did manage to start it after giving it a short tow, left it running for 15 minutes and low and behold wouldn't start again. obviously not getting air out of system. it was running perfect until I changed b@@@@y filter. even tried putting old filter back on.
any advice very welcome
thanks
paul

should be 4 pipes on the filter head, disconnect the return line to the tank and draw fuel through the filter head then reconnect should do it. If still a problem make sure the filter is correctly fitted as it could be drawing air in. Ithe return is to the left as your looking at the filter under bonnet and i believe its the one closest to the bulkhead. Oh just thought you may have the older type filter head fitted with primer button on the head, if so this maybe your problem. If this type its common for the rubber diaphragm on the head to fail causing air to enter the system. Let me know what filter head you have.

take the fuel filter off and put a smear grease around the rubber ring and also on the inside bit that slots onto the tube, they are a known issue, you need to fill the fuel filter right up with diesel before fitting and also put some grease on, if you don't you'll never get the thing to run.
That should solve your problem, good luck

thanks for replies, im pretty sure the filter head is the one without the primer, it has got some type of glass cylinder on it but im led to believe this is to show condition of filter. so are you saying to disconnect the return line to the tank on the tank side of the filter and draw fuel back through or take the return pipe off on the pump side of filter and then draw fuel back through it
will also have another look at filter and try a bit of grease to seal it fordtransit.org/forum/download/file.php?id=3343&t=1&sid=4469624f2f11778913340a5889a3be7e
doing this as favour for a mate as he does lend me van when I need it, was only supposed to be oil and filter change but bloke in shop talked him into fuel filter as well so I felt compelled to fit it for him seen as he'd bought it, and now typical......weekend nearly over and ive got a headache ...

Depending what year it is I've worked on loads and they are a t**t I normally take the top bit off the airbox off and spray carb cleaner in moderation up the intake it gets it running and bled up just make everything is tight first and becareful how much you spray up again it works every time

Yes disconnect the return line from the filter head to the tank and draw fuel through the outlet off the filter head. Once fuel is present with no air reconnect and crank she should go. The filter should be a push up and twist type so make sure its fully home into the filter head then twisted to lock. As mentioned by mutts a little grease can help. They are a pain in the ass to expel air from the system i use a large syringe type suction pump.

bought a hand pump type to bleed lc brakes , i'll try using that. will give that a go in morning.
just read another suggestion on transit forum which says to put both pipes from filter from pump side in a largish bottle and fill with diesel then start and run it that way without letting it run out of fuel. it also mentions blanking off feedback outlet on filter once pipe is off. don't know if that makes much sense.
anyway will try what you said in morning
yes filter does fit as you described
