I have a slight problem with the bodywork I sent off for re spray a few weeks ago. I sent off a newly acquired tank and a brand new tail unit from Norbo. I want the bodywork clean white with 2 stripe blue decals. The idea was to match the white to the new tail unit, simples. My painter is well known amongst the classic Yamaha scene as a top painter. He's saying that the white on the tail unit is far too creamy for clean white. I hadn't noticed anything wrong with it, from memory I thought clean white was quite creamy, but I'm no expert. So, I told him I would give him my decision on what to do in the morning based on the advise I get from posting this topic. Has anyone come across this problem before? Are new panels a more creamy white than they were back in the day? I should point out that I'm trying very hard not to be too anal about this resto so I won't loose any sleep if it's not perfect, having said that any advice on this subject would be very welcome.

Two NEW tail units, two different shades of white. OEB That's interesting. I remember as a teenager that matching body panels on brand new bikes were quite rare.

Strange thing I saw earlier was a plain white nos tail unit described as "Japanese spec"
Could this be a colour difference

Oh no, the plot thickens. I remember having the same debate about candy gold when I restored a fizzy. There are so few genuine original panels left that haven't been faded by sunlight or time it's difficult to say whether or not the candy gold we use now is correct. Even the original, unblemished panels are different. I wonder if there is a definitive clean white. Maybe the question should be, out of the 2 tail units posted by oldelsieboy which do you think is closer to the bikes back in the 80s?

Pick a white your happy with then get your painter to paint the whole kit as that's the only way to guarantee they all match

Decisions Decisions I had this issue when getting my wheels powder coated white to match the bodywork, the original Yamaha white is very creamy compared to a clean white, its hard to go for the creamy white when you put the two side by side, just really down to preference, if you want to keep original look, take your pick and keep a note of the paint code and you know what you've got.

Easy decision. Paint the full set. If he's a decent painter like you say it will be a good result and all will match. Nothing worse than a non matching set, ask yr wife about her dress/shoe/handbag combinations!!

Thanks for all the replies. With your help I've established 2 things. 1 there's no definitive clean white and 2 the new genuine panels are not the same colour. This means I'll ask my painter not to match the new tail unit and use the whiter white he usually uses for LCs. Job done.

And of course as soon as I get the side panels and mudguard he can spray them in the same white.

Get all the panels sprayed there are thousands of shades of white and it's probably one of the hardest colours to match Thanks for all the replies. I bought a NOS front guard in white and a NOS tail peice in white for my original 350LC and they were both far to creamy to match the original tank so I sold them and kept what I already had, totally different colours.

+1 on spraying all panels at the same time, all will match then, if your painter has the facility get a touch up can or bottle made up too just in case or even better get him to write down the recipe
Love that Glacier white too (much)

Hope I don't get the same problem with my Mars bar , I've just take a used tank and front mudgaurd with NOS side panels and tail piece for Mark Cordwell to paint but I only want the tank and muddy painting , the rest just need decals , there's only one black isn't there !
