Does anyone know for sure which was around the genuine Water Pump Bearing fits ?.
The pattern ones normally come open both sides but the genuine bearing comes sealed one side but not the other ?.
Logic would say open side to oil, so that it can take lubrication ?
But then why put a closed side to the water pump seal as that should be dry that side anyway ?.

I'm sure either way will siffice but why do Yamaha specify a 6300Z (sealed one side) if it doesn't matter which way it goes in ?.

The Yamaha service manual states "Install bearing(s) with their manufacturers marks or numbers facing outwards"

The Yamaha service manual states "Install bearing(s) with their manufacturers marks or numbers facing outwards" HTH OEB Yes, that's progress, thanks. Now has anyone got a picture of both sides of a genuine bearing to see if the open or closed side has the "manufacturers marks or numbers"

Yeah that's cool mate ta So going on OEB's workshop info. "Install bearing(s) with their manufacturers marks or numbers facing outwards" and the fact that there only seems to be any markings on the closed seal side, it must go fully open side to the seal.

Took mine apart yesterday and the sealed side was on inside ie facing the pump Mmmmmmm, interesting, but was it in there like that from the factory ?, or been installed by a previous owner who didn't know which way around to fit it ?. I think I'll do it the marsbar350 way and just stick the fooker in there ......lol

i was second owner if memory serves i changed the pump seal once before (back in the late 80,s) i presume i put the bearing back the way it came out.
as you say yourself "Logic would say open side to oil, so that it can take lubrication"

Actually I think daire may have a point regarding open side to the oil and also with the sealed side facing the water pump it would also help stop water getting to the bearing if the water pump seal failed. Looking at the Haynes and Genuine Yamaha manual it shows the bearing with the open side to the oil.
