Quick question - is it possible to remove an LC airbox with the engine still fitted in the frame?

Yes
Remove the rubber boots between the carbies and air box
Remove the top lid of the air box (3 screws)
Remove the battery, loosen off the rear brake reservoir and lift it off the air box pin
Remove the Oil tank
The air box has a semi circular locating lug, so firstly slide the air box backwards
Then you need to remove the second lid with the filter on top of it with the 6 screws
You should now be able, with a few gymnastics (ie rotate, turn around etc) remove the rest of the air box

I got it out of my hybrid, without removing the oil tank.
I seem to remember it was a t$%$%^$^t of a job.
I'm sure they hang them from the ceiling & assemble the rest of the bike around it.

you can do it that way
I just found it easier to take out the oil tank, at least gave some room for my paws to not get bark taken off them
