I doubt anyone noticed but I've not been on for a week or so as my father-in-law died suddenly last Friday night so it was all out to get my wife across to ireland ASAP and then for me and the kids to follow, so Saturday involved driving the wife to the airport at 6am, then me and the kids driving back home, packing etc, then driving to catch the ferry in Stranraer, we arrived at the in-laws 11pm Saturday night, so I'd been up more than 24hrs by then - I was very tired to say the least and had driven nearly 500 miles in total
Anyway, first time I've been to an Irish wake, it was certainly very different, especially with it being a 3 day one, to say the week has been sad and stressful is probably a big understatement, and with my wife having 120 first cousins (yes really 120 ! ) the house was mad busy for the 3 days with people turning up at all hours, I reckon well over 400 people visited during the 3 days - most of them family and I could hardly remember anyone, but they all knew me !
On a funny note, the funeral was different (over 300 people attended at 10am on a Tuesday morning! ), and you couldn't make this up, during the service 2 of the wifes uncles keeled over (thankfully they are ok now), so 2 ambulances and a rapid response paramedic car turned up to the church, even the funeral director said he hadn't seen anything, poor old John (the father in law) was just left outside in the coffin waiting for us all to carry him to the graveyard, he would have smiled to himself as he hated been the centre of attention anyway.
Anyway, back to the 2 uncles, so they take them away in the ambulances - blues and two's blarring, as they approach the hospital there are loads of fire engines outside the hopital and loads of firemen about for some reason, as the ambulances come in to the hospital, a fireman walks out into the road not seeing them coming and gets hit by one of the ambulances, so he is then rushed into casualty with a broken leg !
We eventually got back to the funeral and carried the coffin to the graveyard, John was finally laid to rest and we all had a moment of silence over his grave, I'll miss the man that's for sure, still not sunk in yet, same for the wife and kids, I think all of the family are still in shock, funny this death lark, thought I would be ok with it, but this is the first time someone really close has died for me, so not easy I must say.
RIP John.....you'll be sorely missed
Anyway enough sadness, what have I missed, anything exciting ?
