What's all the differences between the rz, rzv and RZV500r? I've been made aware of a nice clean RZV500r model that's in none standard paint and has done 15k miles and have been asked if I would like to make an offer.i like my big strokers but these are new to me
Thanks

Not an expert but rz is jap model.
Alloy frame, adjustable forks and fuel gauge.
Only negative is that they are restricted by exhausts ( think they are easily sorted ) and carb jets

Ok what's a realistic figure I should be offering? It's a none standard paint job like a race rep paint it's a very clean bike all running etc
I'd be waiting to put it back to white and red
And what should I be looking for on this model?

Take a look at the one in the for sale section. Think that is a reasonable price for that condition and history.
Can you trust the 15k miles on it. Remember it should have an original kph speedo.
Mains allegedly go just over 20k miles and motor rebuild is expensive. Was offered a UK one last year at 5k but engine had not been touched so walked away
Bodywork also rare Steve

Thanks for that. I had an offer figure of about 5 grand in my head let's see how it goes.
Not fussed about it either way to be honest but wouldn't mind trying one for a bit.

They're just a bit more complicated than an LC, the problem I had was, I forgot to set it up before I stripped the engine down, and you have to 'time' the cranks together on assembly. Steve's your man on here, can't remember his name, something like '500 anorak' not much he doesn't know. 20k for cranks is just a myth, some are untouched and standard at over 40K.

Cheers. This one runs perfectly and is in pretty mint condition though it's in a none standard paint job and has had a wheel conversion of dome kind so those are the 2 bits I'd put back to stock

Sounds good for the money, Think R6 wheels are an easy conversion, have you been on the RZ/RD forum? Loads of info and clever people on there

Thanks for that I hadn't been there but have registered now. Hopefully will go pick it up tomorrow and get the body booked in for a repaint ASAP! Now just got to decide which of the bikes is to go and that won't be an easy choice as I love them all

That was the front one. As time was of the essence I got a good one from a breaker and all was well in a few days (miraculously the bore was untouched). A couple of months later coming back from Donington after giving a hiding to a mates gsxr11, the other one went as I pulled into the street. No damage this time just rattles and grumbles from bottom end loud enough to be heard over 4 swarbricks. Got Mr Beckett to refurbish and weld both cranks this time and it was amazingly reliable after loads of serious thrashing and abuse.

^^^ that's quite a testament to the abuse they will take.

That's once they'd been gone through by Terry Beckett and balanced to his tolerances and then welded to stop them twisting, a common problem according to a few people at that time. Maybe yamaha's production line was less than careful at this period?
