Just got hold of a pretty s-agged tank so im gonna have a go at re welding new sections in and refurbing it . Question is what is the best cut line to split the tank for best access in order to remove all the old tank liner and crap inside. I then want to remove what thin steel there is and replace with new. Second question chaps is , does any of you guys know what the best thickness of steel plate to replace the stuff i will be cutting out or what the original metal rhickness of the tanks are , 250 lc by the way Thanks

Never heard of anyone pulling this off, and I have been around this forum 2-3 years now. Sounds something that could be done.. Post some pictures of the whole process

Davey ,good luck with your project.at the moment I have a long term job of 3 tzr 250 tanks at the moment 2 for a mate and 1 for myself.have a look on you tube ,Raymond steele .have a look at of the garden incinerator clips with the tanks in being burnt out/liners and filler.after the burn out they went into a citric acid tank.

Well i cut out the underneath section and im glad i did as there was no way the tank could have been used. It had been relined very badly and it had all delaminated from the inner tank and was sat in the bottom. The steel itself is actualy not far of factory thickness so im happy with that. For me its worth giving it a go , its not rocket science just cutting cleaning , and rewelding then perhaps relining. I had a price of 450 € just to cut and reweld and this was preping the interior steel myself. I will keep you all posted and when ive figured out how to put some pics up i will.

nice one.lol need more fuel for the fire.on the other tank it got that hot I had to take it out of the burner to let it cool down.they both cleaned up well when they were put in the citric acid tank.i have made some repair panels for the tanks 2 of them will need a lot of work the 3rd one not so much.i have been looking at an ac/dc tig welder to do the job.at the moment I still have jobs in the garden to do/finish so the bike stuff for the most part is on the back burner so to speak.

I had a ypvs tank done professionally and they used brass to repair it as it needs less heat when you braze it and saves the tank from distortion..

got as far now as cleaning the tank out of all its goo and old liner. I have no idea as to what was used to line it but it was a bit-h to remove from the seam inside the tank so i heat gunned it and set it a light , yep it worked f--kin stank but it worked. next step was i 120 grit sanded inside and after treated it with sulphuric acid and it has cleaned up a treat. next step is to reweld it then i will reline it with por 15 which although i thought id fooked my last tank it actually tuened out ok, will keep ya posted
